動詞（現在分詞形容詞）が転じて前置詞として使われるものもあるため、前置詞の数はかなり多いように思う。例えば”concerning”, “regarding”, “including”, “excluding”などはすべて前置詞である。
そんな前置詞の中でも今回はちょっと「珍しい」と思われるもの”less”, “barring”を紹介する。

Less (= minus, excluding)
When you are referring to amounts, you use less in front of a number or quantity to indicate that it is to be subtracted from another already mentioned.
「総数（額）をいう場合に、ある数値または数量の直前に”less”をつけると、その数値または数量を既述の数（額）から差し引くことを示す」

Barring (= except for)
You use barring to indicate that the person, thing, or event that you are mentioning is an exception to your statement.
「特定の人、物、または事実に“barring”を使うと、その人、物、または事実が自分が述べたことの例外であることを示す」

「10から2を引くと8になる」
He earns $5,000 a month, less $600 in taxes.
「彼は月収5,000ドルで、そのうち税金に600ドル引かれる」
Barring accidents, I believe they will succeed.
