以前「含む」という日本語を表わす代表的な動詞として”include”と”contain”を取り上げ比較したが、この時に敢えて除外した動詞があった。それは”involve”である。この動詞、少し（気）難しいからである。
今回この”involve”をしっかりと取り上げる。

“involve”の英英辞典の定義は以下の通りである。
1) If a situation or activity involves something, that thing is a necessary part or consequence of it.
「ある物が、特定の状況や活動の必要な一部である、またはその結果であること」
2) If a situation or activity involves someone, they are taking part in it.
「ある人が、特定の状況や活動に参加していること」
3) If you say that someone involves themselves in something, you mean that they take part in it, often in a way that is unnecessary or unwanted.
「ある人が、不必要または望まない（迷惑な）やり方で、ある物（事）に参加していること」
4) If you involve someone else in something, you get them to take part in it.
「誰か他の人をある事に参加させること」
5) If one thing involves you in another thing, especially something unpleasant or inconvenient, the first ting causes you to do or deal with the second.
「ある事によって、人が別の事（特に不快な、または不都合な事）をさせられる、または対処させられること」

どうも単純に「含む・含まれる」意味の動詞ではなく、意図せずして「巻き込まれる」のような意味が強い。たぶん受験用の単語帳で、今でも「含む」を第一義として記載しているものもあるかも知れないが、そうであれば愚かなことである。

「この問題には色々厄介な説明が必要である」
Don’t involve me in your troubles!
「私を君のもめごとの巻き添えにしないでくれ！」
The topic involved her in the argument.
「その話題のために彼女は議論に巻き込まれた」
Why did you get involved with such a cult?
「どうして君はそんなカルト集団と係わり合いになったの？」
She is involved in the book.
「彼女はその本に夢中になっている」
He is deeply involved with Carrie.
「彼はキャリーに首ったけだ」
Her job involves meeting a lot of people.
「彼女は仕事上多くの人に会う必要がある」
