仕事をしてて時々妙（？）なことに気が付くことがある。それはまず名詞ができて、その後に、その名詞がそのまま動詞になったような感じがする単語がある、と言うことである。
たぶんこんな単語は山ほどあるだろうが、今回はやや「政治」絡みの2つの単語を紹介する。

その2つの単語とは“parachute“と“lobby“である。まず名詞としての定義を見ておこう
Parachute: A parachute is a device which enables a person to jump from an aircraft and float safely to the ground. It consists of a large piece of thin cloth attached to your body by strings.
「人を飛行機から降下させ、安全に地上へ浮標させる装置（道具）。人の体にひもで取り付けられる薄くて大きな布から成る。」
Lobby: In a hotel or other large building, the lobby is the area near the entrance that usually has corridors and staircases leading off it.
「ホテルなどの大きな建物の入口近くの場所で、通常はその場所から始まる廊下や階段を備えたもの。」
日頃よく聞く「パラシュート」、「ロビー」そのものの意味である。

これが動詞になるとどうなるか？
Parachute:
1) If a person parachutes or someone parachutes them somewhere, they jump from an aircraft using a parachute.
「パラシュートを使って人が飛行機から降下する、または人を降下させること。」
2) To parachute something somewhere means to drop it somewhere by parachute.
「パラシュートによってある物をある場所に落下させること。」
Lobby: If you lobby someone such as a member of a government or council, you try to persuade them that a particular law should be changed or that a particular thing should be done.
「政府または地方議会のメンバーに、特定の法律を改正したり、特定の事項を実施するよう説得すること。」

Parachuteの方は名詞から想像できる意味であるが、実際のところ”parachuting”は「天下り」の意味で使われている。
一方でlobbyの方は、ホテルのロビーが「議会の控え室」の意味に転じ”lobbyism”（陳情運動・議会工作）とか”lobbyist”（陳情者）のような形で一般的に使用されている。
