先日解説した”remain”に近いものに”survive”という動詞がある。今回はこの”survive”について掘り下げる。
“survive”の定義は以下の通りである。
1) If a person or living thing survives in a dangerous situation such as an accident or an illness, they do not die.
「人や生き物が、事故や病気など危険な状況で死ぬことなく生きながらえる」
2) If you survive in difficult circumstances, you manage to live or continue in spite of them and do not let them affect you very much.
「人が困難な事情に際して、それらにかかわらず、またそれに大きく影響されることなく何とか生きる、または存続する」
3) If something survives, it continues to exist even after being in a dangerous situation or existing for a long time.
「ある物が、危険な状況を経た後においても存在し続ける、または長期間存在する」
4) If you survive someone, you continue to live after they have died.
「人が他の人が死んだ後も生き続ける」

人だけでなく物にも使用し、また4)のように他動詞としても使用される。確認のため以下に例文を挙げる。
Early customs still survive in most uncivilized tribes.
「ほとんどの未開の部族には古くからの習慣がいまだに残っている」
I’ll survive.
「（やっかいな状況だが）私は大丈夫だ（大したことないよ）」
“How’s life?” “Surviving, thanks.”
「どうだい」「なんとかやっているよ」
The deceased was survived by his wife and two children.
「遺族は夫人と2人の子供だった」
His wife survived him by 10 years.
= He was survived by his wife for 10 years.
「妻は彼が亡くなった後も10年生きた」
The writer survived his fame.
「その作家は長生きして、その名声も忘れ去られた」
上記のように、結構会話文にも使われる動詞のようである。
