When you study a language, one of the most important things to think about is your motivation. Why are you studying (learning) a language?
There are many types of motivation, but the two most common types are instrumental (道具的動機づけ)and integrative （統合的動機づけ）motivation. This seems difficult, but instrumental motivation concerns things like higher TOEIC, TOEFL, and 英検 scores. Many people want to learn a language to gain some advantage for getting a job or for studying overseas. Integrative motivation concerns a positive feeling toward speakers of a certain target language or a country. Thus, Australians are cool and Australia is an interesting country, so you want to study (learn) English.
This also brings up the idea of language study (学習) and learning or acquisition (習得). Simply put, the ideas of 英語を勉強する and 英語で何かをする are important. I think it’s best to have both types of motivation, and to both study and “acquire” English. Here is some simple advice:
1. Enjoy yourself! (「英語は難しい」ではなく、「英語は面白い」です！)
2. Try to use (listen to, read, etc.) English every day. Even 10 to 15 minutes is OK.
3. In particular, extensive reading (多読) is a very good way to improve vocabulary, confidence, grammar skills, and to learn about culture.
4. Watch movies in English. The first time without subtitles (字幕), and actively try to guess meaning. Then, watch with subtitles to check meaning and learn new phrases. Finally, watch a few more times without subtitles. Also, be aware of gestures, cultural traits, and pronunciation.
5. Try to use new vocabulary in your English classes or with native-speaker friends.
6. Listen to English and repeat phrases in your head or out loud.
7. Do not translate directly! Think about what you want to say and then find out how native speakers say that idea. 例えば、私がよく聞かれるのは「よろしくお願いします」を英語で何と言いますか。文化が違いますので（集団主義と個人主義等）同じ状況の場合はアメリカ人は“I look forward to working with you.”(ビジネス関係)または “I look forward to getting to know you.”（か簡単に“Nice to meet you!”）と言うと思います.
If you are motivated and make long-term efforts, you will achieve your goals!

私がここで特に関心を持つのは(「英語は難しい」ではなく、「英語は面白い」です！)の部分です。しかし、教える先生がすべきことはその楽しさや面白さを教える事でないでしょうか。
しかし、この中で英語をたくせん読めとか映画を見ろと言うアドバイスがあります。しかし、英語の面白さを知るには読むなら徹底的に読む、聞くなら徹底的に聞く事です。どんどん面白みが湧きます。
でも、読み書きをして、話す聞けをするなら面白いはずはありません。読み書きをして、話す聞けをして英語を面白いと言ってもそれは無理があります。
米英でも日本でもどこでも、話す聞くは学校に行く前に習い、書く読むをやります。英英の子供でも話す聞くは学校ではあまりやりません。その理由は学校へ行くくらいになると英語や日本語を使う事が、話す練習を兼ねているからです。だから読み書きに専念できます。
しかし、話す聞くをまともにできない生徒に英語の英語を見て楽しめと言っても無理な事です。拷問に近いものです。
このような英語の教え方では、英語嫌いがどんどん出るのではないかと心配になります。
