1969年にリリースされたIron Butterflyのサードアルバム。大ヒットした前作の"In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida"（1968年、4位）の陰に隠れてイマイチ知名度が低い印象ですが、実はチャートの最高位はこちらの方が上で、全米3位を記録しています。今回の再発は2曲のボーナス入りで、1999年にCollectors' Choiceから再発されたCDと同内容となっています。Real Gone Musicから6月2日発売予定。

デッドのDick's Picks再発シリーズ、Vol.7は1974年9月に英独仏で7回の公演を行った小規模なヨーロッパツアーから、最初の3日間のロンドンでのショーを3枚のCDに編集したもの。帰国後の10月にはWinterlandで5日間のFarewellコンサートが行われ（"Grateful Dead Movie"に収録）、バンドは一時活動を休止することになります。Real Gone Musicから6月2日発売予定。

Real Gone MusicからのデッドのDick's Picks再発シリーズ、Vol.8は1970年5月2日のニューヨーク州立大学ビンガムトン校（Harpur College）でのライブを3枚のCDに収めたもの（4月28日発売予定）。

この公演はデッドヘッズの人気投票でベストテンに入るような伝説的なショーで、Dick's Picksシリーズの中でも一二を争う素晴らしい内容となっています。時期としてはスタジオアルバムの"Workingman's Dead"がリリースされる直前で、セット１はアンプラグドのアコースティックセット、それとは対照的にセット２＆３はヘヴィでサイケなエレクトリックセットが繰り広げられます。残念ながら完全収録ではなく、セット２の "Cold Rain and Snow"が割愛されていますが、デッド好きには必携アイテムといえるでしょう。

テキサス物 新譜コンピ発売

Don't Be Bad 60s Punk Recorded in Texas

巷では13th Floor Elevatorsの再結成やら、Roky Ericksonの来日公演（バンドはHounds of Baskerville）の話題で盛り上がっているようですが、バックグラウンドのテキサス60sパンクシーンの方もまだまだネタは尽きません。"60s Punk Recorded in Texas"というサブタイトルのコンピCD、"Don't Be Bad!"が5月にBig Beatからリリースされます。

本作は、Sir Douglas Quintetの"She's About a Mover"をヒットさせたプロデューサー、Huey P. Meaux（通称Crazy Cajun）による、Tribe, Pacemaker, Pic 1, Ventural, Capriといったレーベルからリリースされたシングルを、彼の保管していたテープを徹底調査してマスターとしたというコンピレーション。サブタイトルに暗示されているように、テキサスでレコーディングした他州のバンド、ミシシッピのPhinx、ルイジアナのPirates、ミネソタのTrashmenなども収録されています。

サイケ本「サイケデリック・ムーズ」やシンコーのディスクガイド「アシッド・フォーク」で紹介されていたカナダの女性シンガーソングライター、Cathy Youngのデビューアルバム、"A Spoonful of Cathy Young" (1969, Mainstream) がCD再発されます（Auroraから4月14日発売予定）。

先頭の"Spoonful"カバー以外はCathyのオリジナルで、録音はNY。まだ18歳だったという彼女の歌とギターのバックには、当地の名セッションマンによるバンドサウンドが収録されています。フィーメールＳＳＷというより、ちょっとエキセントリックなアシッドフォークロック作品というイメージを強めているのは、やはりファズギターに彩られた"Spoonful" アレンジの強烈さでしょう。

オリジナルナンバーには、メランコリックな曲やJoni Mitchell、Melanieなんかを連想させるようなところもあるんですが、それでも、どこか尋常ではない空気が充満しています。アシッドの影響というより、ホンモノのサイコなのでは？と思わせるような不穏さ・・・。ちなみに、1973年にもう一枚、"Travel Stained"というアルバムをリリースしていますが、こちらはルーツ～スワンプ系の「まとも」な音になっています。

Vol.11は1972年9月27日のNew Jersey公演を3枚のCDに完全収録したもの。Dick's Picksでどれかひとつを選べといわれたら、私は迷ったあげく、やっぱりこれにするんじゃないかと思います。コンセプトといい、ジャケットといい、内容といい、シリーズを象徴するようなタイトル。1972年といえば、春の"Europe '72"ツアーですが、翌年に亡くなるPigpenの病状が悪化して6月を最後にステージに立っていないので、ここでは彼の歌声は聴けません。

昨年Shadoksからアナログ再発されたターキッシュサイケ最後の？秘宝、Mazhar ve Fuatの"Turkuz Turku Cagiririz!" (1973)がCDリリースされます（3月17日発売予定）。

ビートルズの"Rubber Soul"に感銘した二人のティーンエージャー、Aziz Fuat GunerとMazhar Alansonが出会ったのは1966年のこと。その翌年にはすでに「師匠」Baris Mancoの仕事に参加していたというから、早熟の天才だったのでしょう。Barisらとのレコーディングのかたわら、1969年には彼ら自身のシングルをリリース。そして、Mazhar ve Fuatとして制作された唯一のアルバムが本作、"Turkuz Turku Cagiririz!"（「われらトルコ人はトルコの民謡を呼び起こす！」）なのでした。

Shadoksが「10年かかって実現させた」リイシューというだけあって、その内容はトルコ好きには感涙もの。英米のフォークロック名作アルバムに引けを取らない演奏・歌唱能力に、Baris MancoやErkin Korayのような「王道」ターキッシュ・トラッドを練り込んだ、魅力たっぷりの楽曲でファンの心をつかむ前半。そして、なんと後半にはフラワー＆メランコリックな女性ボーカルが登場して、「トルコ版Gentle Soulかっ!?」と思わせるようなソフト＆メロウサイケサウンドを聴かせてくれます。もちろん、トルコ秘伝のファズギターもしっかり入ってます。

ちなみに、Mazhar & Fuatは新メンバーを加えたMazhar Fuat Ozkan (MFO)というトリオとして、80年代以降、現在も活動を続けています。

Sweet Marieの1stがCD再発

2001年にGear Fabからセカンドアルバムの"Stuck in Paradise" (1971)がCD化されていたハワイの3人組、Sweet Marieのデビューアルバム（1970）が再発されます（Gear Fabから4月21日発売予定）。

ギターとドラムの白人二人＋黒人のベース（＆ボーカル）という編成のSweet Marieは西海岸出身（ギター＆ボーカルのSonny Lathropは、"I Never Loved Her"などでガレージコンピでは常連のLAのビートグループ、Starfiresに在籍していた）。ハワイに移ってリリースしたシングルの"Remember Mary"が当地のチャートで1位となるヒットを飛ばして人気バンドとなり、2枚のアルバムを残しています。

音はファンキーなハードロックが基本ですが、要所にファズギターが登場したり、アシッド感漂う南国のエキゾチックさが混ざってたりで、サイケファンにもアピールする内容。楽曲にはジミヘンやスピリットあたりからの影響もうかがえます。
