One year has passed since I left PCC last year, and I have been working as a caregiver since then... I’ve been caring for residents of a nursinghome and participants in an adult day care service. I also have written some reports and essays for professional magazines, I gave 27 lectures for caregivers this year, on part-time basis. I wrote and spoke in Japanese, but last January, I introduced some experiences that I had at PCC, and that made my colleagues and other caregivers so happy.
The plan that some friends and I would write a book disintegrated., but I would like to study U.S-style dementia care. I am especially interested in Validation Therapy.
I plan to visit Portland (Beaverton) for three months this July through October. It is difficult to take a three-month leave from my job, but I asked my boss if I could take three months off to study at PCC. I am wondering if I should take an on-line class (even if it's in summer vacation) or an internship class(especially assistant of activity director)
I really want to study dementia care and activity care. I would greatly appreciate it if you appreciate it if you could give me some advice to what I should take.
I described papers about "Some activities for the elder residents with severe dementia and bedridden. And that papers are published this month by Nissoken publishing company.
I summarize some key points. * How to communicate with the person with severe dementia. Even he/she is having declines in cognitive function and he/she can not have way of verbal communication, he/she looks very calm and peace with someone he/she knows well and regards with affection and trust
*Things that we(care givers) should pay attention to.(→health or body, mental) It is effective..... not to disturb his/her daily rhythm or pace. to encourage and praise Everyone has a right to choose and decide to love and sympathize to ask some works (ex. folding towels)and say thank you. to reminisce together to sing a song together (just clapping hands is OK) religion is important
I recommend some activities individual 1. finger exercise (with nursery song) 2. exercise on the bed 3. to go outside and get fresh air. 4. to eat something that he/she likes It is good to arrange room environment comfortably. * moderate life sound (voices of people, radio, sound of nature) * surrounded by favorite things (pictures, dolls, things he/she has loved) * welcome cabinet
Mini Projector I selected 2 residents who are bedridden. I used mini projector in bed side and observed his/her reaction. I watched an american movie with a male resident using mini projector that he wanted to watch. He wanted to recall the last scene of that movie, so when he could recall the story, he was most pleased with that. I watched a Japanese traditional festival(omatsuri) movie with a female resident using mini projector that she has loved since she was a child. She did not talk and smile, but stared at movie and clapped hands with rhythm. I think It will be effective that we use Karaoke.
Summarizing life story I summarised one resident's life story easily. Just 4 points as follows (each 2 sentences) *Memories of elderly school(hometown) *Memories of the World War II *Memories of wedding *Memories of raising kids It will be triggers that family, friends or caregiver easy to reminisce together.
Aroma therapy Aroma is affect to Cerebral limbic system directory and it makes people relax, cheer up, and so on. Especially, the aroma of citras(orange) makes Japanese delight and nostalgic feel.
