先週、オバマ大統領が日本に初来日しましたね。
初来日で披露されたスピーチが大変わかりやすく丁寧でしたので
今日はそれを取り上げたいと思います。
ここでは最初の二分ちょっとを取り上げています。

the first stop on my first visit to Asia as President of the United States.

It is good to be among so many of you -- Japanese and I see a few Americans here
-- who work every day to strengthen the bonds between our two countries,
including my longtime friend and our new ambassador to Japan, John Roos.

おはようございます。米国大統領としての初のアジア歴訪に際して、最初に東京
を訪れることは大変な光栄です。（拍手） ありがとう。長年の友人であり米国
の新駐日大使であるジョン・ルースをはじめ、日米両国の絆を強化するため毎日
働いている多くの皆さん‐日本国民と数人アメリカ人がここにいるようですが‐
皆さんとご一緒できることはいいことです。

It is wonderful to be back in Japan.
Some of you may be aware that when I was a young boy, my mother brought me to Kamakura,
where I looked up at that centuries-old symbol of peace and tranquility --
the great bronze Amida Buddha. And as a child, I was more focused on the matcha ice cream.
And I want to thank Prime Minister Hatoyama for sharing some of those memories
with more ice cream last night at dinner. Thank you very much.
But I have never forgotten the warmth and the hospitality that the Japanese people
showed a young American far from home.
日本を再訪するのは素晴らしいことです。ご存知の方もあるかと思いますが、
少年時代に母に連れられて鎌倉を訪れました。そこでは何世紀にもわたって平和
と安寧の象徴になってきた青銅製の大仏像を見上げたものです。そして子供だっ
た私は、抹茶アイスクリームの方にもっと関心がありました。
そして、私は昨夜の晩餐会の際に子供の頃の思い出を分かち合うべく
アイスクリームを出してくださった鳩山首相にお礼を申し上げます。
ありがとうございます。
しかし私は、故郷を遠く離れ訪ねてきたアメリカ人の少年に日本の人々
が示してくれた暖かさともてなしを忘れたことはありません。

な歓迎の中に、天皇陛下ご即位２０周年を迎えられた天皇・皇后両陛下にお会い
する非常な栄誉の中に、日本国民により示された暖かいもてなしの中にそれを感
じます。そしてもちろん、小浜市民の皆さんに私のご挨拶と感謝の言葉を伝える
ことなくしては、ここに来ることはできませんでした。
