今月、26日にアメリカでは感謝祭(Thanksgiving）があります。
一般的には親戚が集ってごちそうを食べる、アメリカあげての
祝日ですが、今回はその感謝祭の由来についてネイティブに
解説してもらっていました。

Today I'd like to tell you about the American holiday called Thanksgiving.
As you know, America has many holidays that came from other countries,
but this holiday is truly an American celebration.
The origin of Thanksgiving goes back to 1620, when the English settlers came
from England because of religious persecution,
meaning they couldn't freely practice their own religion.
今日は、感謝祭というアメリカの祝日についてお話ししようと思います。
ご存知のように、アメリカの祝日というのは他の国からきたものが多数ありますが
この祝日は本物のアメリカのお祝いです。
感謝祭の起源はイギリスからの移民者が宗教迫害、つまり信仰の自由を
奪われたことによって（アメリカに）やってきた1620年までさかのぼります。

The English settlers found America on December 11th, 1620.
The first winter after their arrival was very harsh and cold,
and many people died.
But the American Indians helped the settlers that first year,
teaching them how to survive.
The following autumn, the settlers had a celebration because of a good harvest,
and the Indians came and celebrated with them.
They shared food and companionship for three days.
イギリスからの移民はアメリカを1620年、12月11日に発見しました。
彼らがやってきた最初の冬は非常に厳しく寒いもので、たくさんの人が
なくなりました。
しかしアメリカンインディアンがその最初の年に、生き延びるすべを
教えて移民を助けました。
次の年の秋、移民たちは収穫が良かったことをお祝いし、インディアンたちも
やってきて一緒にお祝いをしました。
３日間にわたって食べ物を分け与え、仲良く祝いました。

However, this celebration wasn't repeated every year,
although some American colonies did hold a type of Thanksgiving celebration
occasionally.
It wasn't until 1863 when President Abraham Lincoln declared Thanksgiving
a national holiday.
Finally, in 1941 the American Congress declared it a legal holiday
on the fourth Thursday in November.
アメリカの植民地によってはこの形態の感謝祭はたびたび催されましたが
毎年繰り返されることはありませんでした。
1863年にエイブラハム・リンカーン大統領が初めて感謝祭を祝日に設定しました。
そして1941年にやっとアメリカ議会が感謝祭を11月第4週木曜日の正式な
祝日に設定しました。

Many kinds of food are served, such as turkey or ham.
These are two of the most important traditional foods.
Also, potatoes, pumpkin pie, cranberry sauce, and stuffing are very common.
Now, to most Americans, it is a day to think about what you are thankful for,
and to spend time with family and friends, just as our ancestors did
with the Indians so many years before.
七面鳥やハムなどのさまざまな食べ物が食されます。
七面鳥とハムはもっとも重要な伝統的食べ物です。
そしてジャガイモやパンプキンパイ、クランベリーソース、スタッフィング
といったたべものも非常によく出されます。
いまや、ほとんどのアメリカ人にとってこの日はかつて祖先がアメリカンインディアン
とそうしたように自分が感謝できることを考え、家族や友人と時間を過ごす日です。
