keep out と keep offの違い

最近、ウチのそばの木の囲いに、こんな立て看板が立ちました。

KEEP OFF

樹齢200年の樹らしいのですが、最近元気が無くなっていました。

ここで、疑問。

そういえば、、、

立入禁止は、KEEP OUT

芝生に入るなは、KEEP OFF


何が違うの？

結論から言うと「off」が離れてという感覚なのに対して、「out」が外にという感覚の違いみたいです。


Keep off 

近づいてはいけない → 離れて
1. to not go onto a particular area of land
2. to avoid a particular type of food or drink

Keep off sugary food.
甘いものは避ける。

Keep off the road.
道路に出てはいけない

Dogs must be kept off the beach.
犬はベンチに近づけてはいけません。




Keep out

中に入ってはいけない → 外に
to not go in a place, or to stop someone or something from going into a place
という違いみたいです。

Keep out of the area.
この地域は立ち入り禁止

Keep out of that building.
あのビルには入るな

Keep out of their business.
彼らには干渉するな
