日本人辺境論

日本人辺境論 (新潮新書)/内田 樹

ここ半年間のベストセラーの一つである。今頃読んだ。

著者の内田樹氏の主張は、「日本人は辺境に住むモノマネ師であり、その学びの仕組みは賢く、効率的であり、これからもずる賢い辺境民として生き抜こうではないか」ということだと、私は読みとった。

日本人は、常により高度な文明と隣り合わせに生きてきた。中華思想がその典型的な例として挙げられているが、西洋的帝国主義や戦後のアメリカなども同じ類だろう。

この事実は、つまり日本人には、常に「お手本」が存在したことを意味する。その「お手本」から“良いとこ取り”をして、自らの社会を改善してゆく、これが「辺境のモノマネ師」の奥義である。

その奥義を奥義たらしめているのは、日本人の「学ぶ力」にあると、氏は論じている。

“良いとこ取り”は、資源の限られた土地で生き抜く為の作法であり、日本人は、その地政学的環境により、作法を洗練してきた、と述べている。一方でその弱みにも触れている。その歴史的背景故に、“世界初、業界標準”を造るのが苦手、というのである。

しかし、氏はけして自虐的にはなっていない。

「とことん辺境で行こう！」と意気揚々だ。

思うに、これらの考え（個人的には“気分”の方がしっくりくるのだが）は、多くの日本人にとって共感を持てるものだろう。冒頭、「本書には、日本人論に関する新しい知見は何一つありません」とぶっちゃけているように、これらは、既に指摘されていることでもあるし、再証するかのように、本書はベストセラーになっている。だから、「日本人辺境論」そのものにモノ申すつもりはない。

しかし、「とことん辺境で行こう！」とは、具体的に何をするものなのか、その考えの端くらいは示して欲しかった。１４８ページで、「現代日本の国民的危機は、「学ぶ力」の喪失、つまり辺境の伝統の喪失」であると指摘しているなら尚更である。

もちろん、氏は形而上学者であり、その解決策を見出すことを期待してはいけないのかもしれない。

それは、別の専門家の、いや、おそらく私たち一人一人の仕事なのだろう。

-An Essay What’s Japanese, Mocker Live In Remote Region-

The author, Tatsuru Uchida maintains his opinion that Japanese is “a mimic” because of geopolitical reason, which means Japanese has lived in the remote region where being edge of advanced civilizations. He explained it with an example, “China-Centered View” is the typical one.

I guess that Western-imperialism and Dependence to United States after world warⅡ are also another example. That means that Japanese has always had a target which they should aim to or pick up the best thing, to improve their society themselves. Japanese learning style was wisely efficient, he said. He also showed his viewpoint. For that historical background, Japanese hasn’t been good at building up a standard which is not compared to something, which is absolute thing. After showing these opinions, he spoke the readers that “we are the mimic”, “It’s great”, then “We are going as the mimic continuously.”

I think his opinions are persuasive many Japanese, and maybe got a fellow by the address which accepts Japanese is the mocker and not embarrassing to the mocker. In fact, this book became one of best-sellers recent half year.

However, I have one question. What do we do for making better future as the mimic?

We are standing of decay economically and ethically. We have enormous issue, huge debt with developing aging-society, but not reach a solution for the issue. I understand that he is a metaphysician. He isn’t responsible for making the solution. But I think here is the key element of the solution. He mentioned at page 148 in the chapter2. “Japanese invented the most efficient learning system to develop the society.” In addition, “There, or Here would be a crisis that Japanese lose the clever learning style.” However, he didn’t show an answer retaining and turning it to practical use for the future generations.

I think if we get the answer, we will be proud ourselves again. Let’s do that.
