俺がCDジュークボックスの前で曲を選んでいると、眼鏡をかけた青年がやって来た。彼は「ちょっと失礼」と言って、ジュークボックスのタッチパネルを素早く操作して、仲間のいる席に戻って行った。するとすぐにエディ・ブリッケル＆ニュー・ボヘミアンズの「Little Miss S.」が始まった。なかなかセンスの良い奴だ。
それで俺も負けじと、北カリフォルニアの海辺の街に相応しい曲をチョイスした。エディ・ブリッケルの曲が終わると、
クイックシルバー・メッセンジャー・サーヴィスの「フレッシュ・エアー」のイントロが鳴った。ラジオや有線放送でこの曲がふいに始まると、俺はいつもハッとする。俺の気持ちを分かってくれる人はたくさんいる筈だ。現に、先ほどエディ・ブリッケルをリクエストした眼鏡の青年が驚いた様子で俺のところへすっ飛んで来た。
「この店で、僕以外にクイックシルバー・メッセンジャーサーヴィスの曲を選んだのは君が初めてだよ！どうしてこの曲を選んだの？」
「好きだからさ」
「ジョン・シッポリナのギターは最高だよね」
「ディノ・ヴァレンテイノも良いよ」
ロックが好きな眼鏡の彼と、その仲間たちとあれこれ話しているうちに午後9時になった。ステージでは「時計仕掛けのオレンジ」に登場する不良少年グループ「ドルーグ」のユニフォームである生成りの上下にサスペンダーと山高帽で決めた5人編成のバンドがサウンドチェックを始めている。
やがてジュークボックスの音楽が止み、バンドが「Train kept a rollin'」を演り始めた。「ドルーグ」のコスチューム姿の彼らは、ヤードバーズのトリビュートバンドだった。赤いライトに照らされて、バンドはエネルギッシュにヤードバーズを演じている。演奏はけっこう巧い。彼らは、「Lost woman」、「Shapes of things」、「I wish you would」、「I'm a man」等のヤードバーズの代表曲を次々に演奏してオーディエンスの喝采を浴びた。
ヤードバーズ・トリビュートバンドの演奏が終わり、デヴィッドのDJタイムが始まった。彼一流の選曲によるガレージパンク、サーフロック、ガールズポップスに乗って、ダンスフロアはすぐにオーディエンスでいっぱいになった。長い時間をかけてサンフランシスコまでたどり着いて、「ウインターズ・タヴァーン」のようなバーでハイになって、思い思いのハロウインファッションに身を包んだ人たちが踊っているのを眺めているのは楽しいことだ。パイレーツ・オヴ・カリビアンのジャック・スパロウ、パルプフィクションのミア、13日の金曜日のジェイソン、革ジャン姿のマット・ディロン、海賊、尼さん、吸血鬼、狼男......みんなが音楽のなかに溶け込んでいる。
そんな情景を見ていたら、俺もDJをやりたくなってしまったので、DJブースにいるデヴィッドのところに行って頼んでみた。
「俺もDJをやりたいな」
「そうか、構わないぜ。俺のレコードを使ってくれ。ジェフたちのバンドの後でやればいいよ」
俺はまたトイレに行き、外へタバコを吸いに出た。裏口のドアの傍に置かれた木製のベンチには、数人のサーファーが屯していて、またパイプが回って来た。一口吸って、サーファーの青年の一人にパイプを渡すと、彼は俺にこう訊いてきた。
「なあ、日本の海の波はどうなんだい？どこの海の波が良いんだ？」
サーフィンのことなど何一つ知らない俺は返事に窮したが、「千葉か茨城の海の波が良いと思うよ」といい加減な答えを返してしまった。まあ、当らずと雖も遠からずだろう。
店に戻ってみると、ジェフたちのバンドの演奏が始まろうとしていた。彼のバンドの名前はザ・ハンプトン・ウイックス。イギリスの地名がその由来だが、モッズの連中が履くスリムなスラックスをハンプトン・ウイックと呼ぶ習わしもある。メンバー編成は、ヴォーカル/リズムギターのジェフ、ヴォーカル/リードギターのポール、ベースマン・アンディ、そしてドラムはクリスというフォーピース。ベースのアンディとはこの日は話さなかったが、彼とは翌年の5月にサンフランシスコのある場所で再会することになる。それはまた別の話だ。
そのバンド名のとおり、彼らのレパートリーは、60年代のブリティッシュ・ビート・ナンバーがメインだった。スモール・フェイセズ、キンクス、ザ・フー、プリティ・シングス、ゼム、トロッグス、ザ・ムーヴ...。そうそう、彼らの演奏開始直前にデヴィッドがDJでうっかりザ・ムーヴの「I can hear the grass grow」をかけたら、ジェフとポールが慌ててデヴィッドを止めていた。彼らはその曲を演る予定だったのだ。
ザ・ハンプトン・ウイックスのライヴが終盤に差し掛かり、ジェフがスペシャルゲストとして、スティーヴ・マッケイをステージに呼び、オーディエンスに彼を紹介した。そして始まったのは、ブリティッシュ・フリーク・ビートのカルト・クラシック、ジ・オープンマインドの「マジック・ポーション」。マニアックな選曲だ。ジェフとポールが奏でるハードなリフの間を縫って、蛇のようにうねるアンディのベースラインがバンドをドライヴさせている。クリスのドラミングはあくまでもタイトだ。そして、バンドのグルーヴが白熱してきたところを見計らって、スティーヴが演奏に加わり、悪魔的な音色のジャージーなブロウを聴かせる。彼は完全にアドリブで吹きまくっている。あのストゥージスの「ファンハウス」で披露した圧巻の「狂ったメイシオ・パーカー的」なムードを彷彿させるプレイだ。バンドが一丸となった長いインタープレイの後、ザ・ハンプトン・ウイックスのライヴは劇的なエンディングを迎えた。
ライヴが終わり、次は俺のDJタイムなのだが、ちょっとストーンしていた俺は選曲に迷っていた。まあ、30分位やらせてもらおう。デヴィッドのレコードボックスの中を見てみると、ガレージサイケのオムニバス盤「ペブルス」があった。そんなわけで、俺のアメリカでの初DJの1曲目はザ・リッターの「アイム・ア・マン」だった。オリジナルはボ・ディドリーで、それをヤードバーズがハードロック調にカバーし、ザ・リッターがそれをさらにハードに、サイケデリックにカバーした圧巻のサイケ・ガレージ・クラッシック。ダンスフロアの様子は上々で、みんながモンキーダンスやジグを踊りだした。やがて曲が後半の壮絶なサイケデリック・ジャムに差し掛かると、ジェフが俺のところに来た。
「君という人のことが分かったような気がするよ！」
この時から、ジェフと俺は、渡米するたびに必ず顔を合わせる良い友達になった。
ほっとした俺は、次にドアーズの「ラヴ・ミー・トゥー・タイムズ」をスピンした。これも好評で、ジルバやラインダンスを踊りだす人たちもいた。特に黄緑色のアディダスのジャージを着た眼鏡と顎髭が印象的な男性が一番楽しそうに踊っていた。彼、シージェイは実は「ウインターズ・タヴァーン」のオーナーだった。彼がデヴィッドの旧友だということは後で知った。さらに、今日は彼の誕生日だったのだ。シージェイも、やはりフレンドリーなナイスガイだ。
「俺の店に来てくれてありがとう。君のためにDJブースをいつでも開けておくから、いつでも来てくれ！」
この後、何をスピンしたのかは覚えていない。ただ、正直に言うと、この30分間は俺のDJ経験のなかで最もエキサイティングなひと時だった。こんなに楽しくレコードを回せたことはなかった。そうやって感慨に浸って、DJブースでぼうっとしていたら、デヴィッドから「おい！曲が終わるぞ！」と言われた。そして、慌てた俺がレコードを選んで、針を下した曲は、ローリング・ストーンズの「テル・ミー」だった。曲がサビに差し掛かると、デヴィッドが俺を見てしみじみと言った。
「良いバンドだよな」
October 31, 2013 Halloween party at Winters Tavern
While I was choosing songs in front of the CD jukebox, a young man with glasses came over. "Excuse me," he said, flicking the jukebox's touch panel and back to his friend's seat. Then Eddie Brickell & New Bohemians' "Little Miss S." started. He has a good sense. Then I chose a song that was suitable for a seaside town in Northern California, trying not to lose to him. After Eddie Brickell's song ended, the intro of Quicksilver Messenger Service's "Fresh Air" rang. I'm always taken aback when this song suddenly starts on the radio or cable broadcast. I'm sure there are a lot of people out there who understand how I feel. In fact, the young man with glasses who requested Eddie Brickell earlier rushed to me looking surprised.
"You're the first person in this bar to choose a Quiksilver Messenger Service song other than me! Why did you choose this song?"
"Because I love this band"
"John Shippollina's guitar playing is the best!"
"Dino Valentino is also good"
It was 9:00 pm while I was talking with the rock-loving glasses guy and his friends. On the stage, a five-member band wearing white uniforms, suspenders, and bowler hats from the delinquent group "Droog" that appears in "A Clockwork Orange" began their sound check.
Eventually the jukebox music stopped and the band started playing 'Train kept a rollin''. Dressed in "Droog" costumes, they were a Yardbirds tribute band. Illuminated by red lights, the band energetically performs Yardbirds' hit tunes. Their play is pretty good. They performed classic Yardbirds songs such as "Lost woman",
"Shapes of things," "I wish you would," and "I'm a man," to the audience's ovation.
After the Yardbirds tribute band finished playing, it was time for David's DJ time. With his top-notch selection of garage punk, surf rock and girl pop, dance floors quickly filled audiences. After a long journey to San Francisco, it's fun to get high in bars like Winter's Tavern and watch people dance in their Halloween fashion.
There's Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Caribbean, Mia from Pulp Fiction, Jason from Friday the 13th, Matt Dillon in a leather jacket, pirates, nuns, vampires, werewolves... Everyone is immersed in music.
Seeing that scene made me want to DJing too, so I went to David at the DJ booth and asked him.
"Can I play DJing too?"
"Okay, no problem. Use my record. You can do it after Jeff's band."
I went to the bathroom again and went out to smoke. A couple of surfers were huddled around the short steps at the back door, and another pipe came round me. And one of the young men surfers asked me.
"Hey, how are the waves of the sea in Japan? Which sea waves are good?"
I didn't know anything about surfing, so I was at a loss for an answer, but I gave a sloppy answer, saying, "I think the ocean waves in Chiba or Ibaraki are good."
Well, it's not a flat out lie.
Back at the bar, Jeff's band was about to start playing. His band name is The Hampton Wicks. It's named after a place in England, but there's also a tradition of calling slim slacks worn by mods Hampton wicks. The members are Jeff on vocals/rhythm guitar, Paul on vocals/lead guitar, Andy on bass,
and Chris on drums. I didn't talk to bassist Andy on this day, but I will meet him again in May next year at a place in San Francisco. That's another story.
As the band name suggests, their repertoire was mainly 60's British beat numbers. Such as Small Faces, Kinks, The Who, Pretty Things, Them, Troggs, The Move... Speaking of which, just before they started playing, David accidentally played The Move's "I can hear the grass grow" at the DJ, and Jeff and Paul hurriedly stopped him. They were supposed to play the song.
In the second half of the Hampton Wicks show, Jeff invited Steve MacKay on stage as a special guest to introduce him to the audience.And so began the British freak beat cult classic, The Openmind's "Magic Potion." It's a maniac song selection. Andy's serpentine bassline like a snake drives the band through hard riffs by Jeff and Paul. Chris' drumming is so tight and sure. Then, just as the band's groove was heating up, Steve joined in and blew his devilish jazzy phrases. He's totally improvising and blowing. It's a play that reminds me of the overwhelming "Insane Maceo Parker-like" mood that he showed at the Stooges' "Fun House".
After a lengthy band interplay, the Hampton Wicks show came to a dramatic conclusion.
After the gig, it's my DJ time. I'm in a good mood because I've been stoned for a while. Well, let me do it for about 30 minutes. When I looked in David's records box, there was a garage psychedelic omnibus album "Pebbles". So the first track of my first DJing in America was "I'm A Man" by The Litter. Originally by Bo Diddley, The Yardbirds covered it in a hard rock style, and The Litter played it more harder and more psychedelic.
The dance floor was in high spirits, and everyone started dancing monkey dances and jigs. And Jeff came up to me as when the song broke into an epic psychedelic jam.
"I feel like I know who you are!"
From that time on, Jeff and I became good friends always see each other every time I go to the Bay Area.
I then chose "Love Me Two Times" by The Doors. This tune was also popular, and some people started dancing jive and line dancing. The man with the bright green Adidas setup, glasses and beard was dancing the most happily.
His name is Sea-Jay, he is the owner of "Winter's Tavern". I later learned that he was an old friend of David's. Besides, it was his birthday today. Sea-Jay is also a friendly nice guy.
"Thank you for coming to my bar. I will always open the DJ booth for you, so come and DJing anytime!"
I don't remember what I chose tunes after this. To be honest, those 30 minutes were the most exciting moments in my DJing experience. I've never had so much fun DJing before. So I was immersed in that emotion, and I was dazed in the DJ booth when David said, "Hey! The song's about to end!"
Then, in a panic, I picked a record and put the needle down to the song "Tell Me" by The Rolling Stones.
When the song hits the chorus, David looks at me and said with deeply emotionally.
"They're a really good band."
