Japan, U.S. and South Korea mull trilateral summit by end of year
Washington – Japan, the United States and South Korea are considering holding a trilateral summit by the end of this year, Mira Rapp-Hooper, senior director for East Asia and Oceania at the U.S. National Security Council, said Thursday.

今回注目する単語は mull /mʌl/ です。
LDOCE では３つの語義が確認できました。 "verb [transitive] usually mull something ↔ over to think about a problem, plan etc for a long time before making a decision 類義語 consider", "noun [countable] an area of land that sticks out into the sea – used in Scotland", "Mull (also the Isle of Mull) a large island off the west coast of Scotland, the largest island in the Inner Hebrides. It is often visited by tourists, especially in summer." と定義されています。
Cambridge Dictionary では "verb [ T ] to heat wine or beer with added sugar and spices:" とあります。また同辞書に mull something over で "phrasal verb [ T ] to think carefully about something for a long time:" とあります。
これは『ジーニアス英和辞典』では３つの語義が確認できます。「動 他 〈ワイン・ビール・リンゴ酒など〉に甘味と香料を加えて温める」、「動 自 他 (...を)じっくり考える《♦通例次の成句で》 mull over [自] 熟考する [他] ...を熟考する (consider)」、「名 C ｟スコット｠岬」、という意味が確認できます。
以上より mull に様々な意味があることが確認できましたが、今回の意味は「(...を)じっくり考える」であると分かります。今回は mull のみで使われていますが、mull over という使われ方も覚えておきたいです。
