Olympics: Japan wins eventing bronze, 1st equestrian medal in 92 yrs

PARIS (Kyodo) -- Japan's eventing team won a bronze medal at the Paris Olympics on Monday, with a third place in the jumping phase enough to secure the country's first equestrian medal in 92 years.

The team of Kazuma Tomoto riding Vinci de la Vigne, Yoshiaki Oiwa piloting MGH Grafton Street, Ryuzo Kitajima on Cekatinka and Toshiyuki Tanaka and his horse Jefferson finished third with 115.80 penalty points.

Great Britain won gold with 91.30 penalty points ahead of France with 103.60 at the Chateau de Versailles.

"I still can't believe it," said Oiwa after the event. "I feel like I've finally made it."

Oiwa went on to praise MGH Grafton Street for an unexpectedly good jumping performance, saying, "He's not a horse that's particularly good at hurdles. I think he did a great job."

Japan's previous Olympic medal came in 1932 when Takeichi Nishi won gold in the show jumping event on his horse Uranus.

Japan ranked fifth after the dressage stage, having racked up 87.40 penalties, then improved to third in the cross country when Kitajima added 6.40 points.

Following the cross country, Japan incurred a 20-point penalty when Kitajima and Cekatinka were replaced after the horse inspection by Tanaka and Jefferson.

The replacement pair incurred 1.60 points and Oiwa 0.40, but the team still was able to claim third in the phase and the bronze medal overall.

Later on Monday, Kazuma Tomoto backed up to finish fifth in the individual jumping final on Vinci de la Vigne with 27.40 penalty points. Michael Jung of Germany won gold with 21.80.
