今日の講義で少しだけ話題にのぼったのが「かすみ草」。
英語名(学名 genus name ではなく,俗称)はとてもキュートで,かつブランド名にもなっているようなので,学生はみんな知っているものと思っていました。あにはからんや瞬時に訳せる者はいなかった。ちょっと驚いた次第です。
名前は baby's breath (今更ですが...)。baby's をそのまま「赤ちゃん」とするか、「恋人」にするかは使用者にまかせることにしてこういう発想がなんとも心に残ります。
