LDOCEでは "to say or do something stupid that will cause you a lot of trouble" と定義されていました。
Cambridge Dictionaryでは "to do something without intending to which spoils a situation for yourself" と定義されていました。
以上のことから本文の "shot myself in the foot" は「（自分の足を撃つような）へまをした」と考えられます。
