友達と話していて, 言葉を忘れて「喉まで出かかっているのに…」と言い、ふと英語でも同じような表現はあるのか気になったので調べてみました。
調べたところ, ぴったりの表現を見つけました。それが "on the tip of one's tongue" です。
LDOCEでは "if a word, name etc is on the tip of your tongue, you know it but cannot remember it" と定義されていました。
例 What is her name? It’s on the tip of my tongue. Joan. Joan Simpson. That’s it!
Cambridge Dictionaryでは "If something that you want to say is on the tip of your tongue, you think you know it and that you will be able to remember it very soon" と定義されていました。
同じ意味でも日本語では「喉」, 英語では「舌」で表されていて面白いと思いました。(Lily)
