イギリス王室は17日、トム･ムーアさんに ｢ナイト｣ の爵位を授与しました。
"I could never have imagined this would happen to me," Moore said in a message posted on Twitter before received the ancient accolade.
accolade /ˈækəlèɪd/ を取り上げます。『ジーニアス英和辞典』 (第5版) には ｢賞賛、賛辞、 (ナイト爵位授与式で) 国王 [女王] が授与者の肩を剣で軽くたたくこと｣ と記載されています。
LDOCE では “praise for someone who is greatly admired, or a prize given to them for their work” と定義されています。
Oxford Living Dictionaries で語源を確認すると、“Early 17th century from French, from Provençal acolada, literally ‘embrace around the neck (when bestowing knighthood)’, from Latin ad- ‘at, to’ + collum ‘neck’.” とあり、フランス語の acolada が由来することがわかりました。
元軍人のトム･ムーアさんは自宅の庭を100回往復する挑戦を行って医療機関への寄付金を呼びかけ、日本円で４０億円以上集めました。何歳になっても挑戦し続けることは本当に素晴らしいと思いました。(Take-chan man)
