『ジーニアス英和辞典』 (第5版) には ｢停戦、休戦、戦闘中止、撃ち方止めの号令｣ と記載されています。
LDOCE では “an agreement to stop fighting for a period of time, especially so that a more permanent agreement can be made” と定義されています。また同義語として armistice やtruce が挙げられていました。
cease は ｢～をやめる｣ という意味で、fire は ｢発砲する｣ といった意味を持つので、ceasefire がこのような意味になったのだと思います。
