guilt-trip /gilt trip/ を取り上げます。guiltもtripも見慣れた単語ではありますが、この二つが合わさるとどのような意味になるのでしょうか。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第四版、大修館書店）には「罪悪感、自責の念」とありました。LDOCEでは “to make someone feel guilty” と定義されており、くだけた表現であるということも説明されています。
tripを改めて同辞書で調べてみました。すると、「〈人〉に〔…で〕間違い[へま]をやらせる、矛盾したことを言わせる」という意味があるということが分かりました。この意味が、tripが使われている由縁ではないかと思います。
ちなみに「罪悪感をもたせる」という場合には、lay a guilt trip onを使うことができます。同辞書には例文として、lay a guilt trip on him.というものが挙げられています。 (rain)
