寒さのあまり、マフラーに顔を埋めながら
下を向いてさくさく歩いていると、
「はーい、いってらっしゃ～い！」
と元気でやさしい声が。
だから、大きな声で言ってみました。
「いってきまーす！」
道路で車を誘導している誘導員さんに温かく笑顔で送り出され、
今朝は駅まで向かったのでした。
思いがけないあったかい見送りに、心がほこほこして嬉しかったです。
そんなほこほこした気分で、今日もインタビューへ行きましょう。

1) Why did you apply to 60th JASC?
- I wanted to experience discourse with Japanese students. As a student of Japanese and Japanese studies, I was eager to hear what the Japanese students and my fellow American students had to say about various issues related to the two countries. And to be honest, I didn’t want to work all summer.
2) How was 60th JASC? (Did it influence you in some way? If so, how etc)
-The 60th JASC was an excellent experience for me; I now think more globally than I ever had before and I can say that I have changed in many noticeable ways as a result. JASC is a great opportunity for maturation in some respects; such a powerful experience or sequence of events can teach you a lot about yourself and who you are becoming.
3) What was the most memorable thing in 60th JASC?
-There was no one “thing”; perhaps all the people who were involved. I began JASC with a few Japanese friends from my school and ended it with dozens of friends at schools all over Japan. The times shared with those friends and my American delegate friends are simply unforgettable.
4) If you had to express JASC in one phrase or word, how would you describe it?
-It’s a contradiction! It still confuses me how something that has such a remarkable impact and should be considered “work” is also the most fun I’ve ever had in my life!
5) When is the happiest moment in a day?
-Finishing your work and enjoying a good conversation with a friend over dinner!
6) Imagine that now you were in an inhabited island and were allowed to bring only 3 items. What would you bring? and why?
-I would bring a pen, some paper and a kanji dictionary. Think of how good my kanji would be by the time I got rescued!
7) What would you do on the last day of the earth?
-Go for a drive in a Porsche with someone I care about. Perhaps discuss economics or literature.
8) Have you ever been to Japan?
-No! This will be my first time, and I’m really excited because I’ve been waiting for this for a long time!
9) What is your favourite phrase or word in Japanese?
-もちろん！
10) Give a short message for the readers in English.
-Hello! I look forward to meeting all of you; if you are reading this now, you must be interested in the Japan – America Student Conference and that’s great! JASC is awesome because of all of you, so thanks very much!

-I was filling out my Japan study abroad applications during my economics class. There is so little time in a day!

アメリカ側実行委員インタビュー no.3
あ～お休みが終わっちゃう
と、日曜日の夕方になるとよく思っていました。
特に小学生の頃、こうやって日曜日の夕方から夜にかけて少しさびしくなってたっけなんてことを思い出したのは、
今日、空によく映えたきれいな夕焼けをみたからです。
水色とオレンジとがきれいなグラデーションを奏でていてきれいでしたよ。
室内にいたり、なんだかんだで
なかなか夕焼けをまじまじと眺めることがない最近。
小学生の頃、夕焼けは家に帰る時に毎日のように見るものだったのにな～。
（外で遊びまわる→ 夕焼けになる →「そろそろ帰る時間だ！」）
ちなみに、今日の夜は星も月もきれいに見えました。
夏空より冬空の方が、星も夕焼けもきれいに映えるような気がするのは気のせいですかね。

1) Why did you apply to 60th JASC?
- Because I figured Summer 2008 was going to suck alot if I didn't do anything special.
2) How was 60th JASC? (Did it influence you in some way? If so, how etc)
-Simply amazing. I learned about minorities in Japan and the US in detail, acquired more leadership skills, made many Japanese friends, and has given me a chance to become a more interactive student!!
3) What was the most memorable thing in 60th JASC?
-Oh man... being stuck in Missoula. I thought I would never get outta there.
4) If you had to express JASC in one phrase or word, how would you describe it?
-It's magic.
5) When is the happiest moment in a day?
-I'm the happiest when I'm taking a shower.. I love feeling clean and smelling nice. hahahahaha.
6) Imagine that now you were in an inhabited island and were allowed to bring only 3 items. What would you bring? and why?
-my bed because I need to sleep on my comfy bed. every night.
-iPod and a solar-powered charger because I loooooooove music
-I know a person isn't a thing, but a JASCer; I need someone to keep me sane.
7) What would you do on the last day of the earth?
-I hope to spend that day with someone I love.
8) Have you ever been to Japan?
-Yes, twice. My second day ever in Japan, at a park in Shinjuku, I saw two men in business suits embracing each other. It was such a heart-warming scene.
9) What is your favourite phrase or word in Japanese?
-なんとかなるさ
10) Give a short message for the readers in English.
-Hello there. Why is this message so hard to write? I wrote some stupid stuff over and over again past 20 minutes! Haha.. JASC is just awesome... I haven't met you yet, but don't worry-- as soon as we do, you know that we will be talking.. talking... and talking... and keep talking for the rest of our lives.

-アイ・アム・カレン。ナイス・ツー・ミート・ユー！笑
きつい丘の上に上がれば見えなかった世界が見えるようになります。道に迷ってしまって、すこし怖かった私でした。けれどもJASCを通じて、やっと道を見つけられて、今、その丘の上に上がっているところです。
12) What were you doing just before answering the questions now?
-I asked my friend to bring me some food here (I am in a science building at my school) because I am very!!! hungry. He's here now with my food. Time to eat... bye!!
