Recounting the differences bet parenting in NYC and Tokyo!
今回は在米生活を振り返りながら、ニューヨークと東京での子育ての違いについて書いてみました
（前回の東京での日常についての記事↓ Previous post on our daily life in Tokyo）
１．費用について
娘は就学前だったのでその限りでの比較になりますが、費用面では断然東京がベター。
どんなに高くても保育園が月30万というのは見たことがありませんが、マンハッタンでは普通にあります
もちろん平均給与や物価の差もあるでしょうが、それを加味しても金銭的には東京のが良いです。
1. The cost
Although my analysis is confined to pre-school age children, parenting is much less expensive in Tokyo. I have never seen any daycare/preschool that costs more than $3K in Tokyo, but this is not rare in Manhattan. Even after taking into account the differences in salary and prices, I would definitely say Tokyo is more appealing in this regard.
２．物理的環境について
まずFacilitiesの意味で考えればここも東京に軍配が上がります。
というのも、ニューヨークではTimes SquareやPenn Station等の主要駅を除き、地下鉄にエレベーターがありません。
そのせいで、特に娘が大きくなってきてからは階段の上り下りにだいぶ苦労しました
しかしながら、公園などの遊び場という意味で言えばはるかに広大な土地のあるニューヨークが良いです。
当時の家から徒歩20分圏内でもRiverside Park、Sakura Park、Riverbank State Parkといった大きな公園があり遊び場にはまず困りません。
その他にもChildren's MuseumやCentral Park Zooといった子供向けの場所も沢山あります
2. Physical environment
Speaking of the facilities, again Tokyo is more favorable. This is because in NYC there are no elevators at subway stations except for major ones, which made it harder for us to go up and down stairs with a stroller. However, NYC has much more playgrounds than Tokyo. For example, there are Riverside Park、Sakura Park and Riverbank State Park within 20 minutes of walk from our apartment. Additionally, there are such places as Children's Museum and Central Park Zoo in which childrens can be absorbed.
３．社会的環境について
人との関わりという意味では私はニューヨーク推しです
何故ならば・・・電車の中で娘がうるさくしていても誰も嫌な顔をしないし、フレンドリーに話しかけてくれたりするから
後は、公園でもフランクに親同士で会話しやすい雰囲気があったと思います。日本ではお互いに不干渉、トラブルを起こさない・・・という感じですがNYはトラブルを寛容し、それを通じて絆を深めるという経験がありました
3. Social environment
When it comes to people, I like NYC better because people are more baby-friendly than those in Tokyo. Moreover, there is a more welcoming atmosphere in playgrounds and other places for children. NYC seems to tolerate the trouble arising from children, and makes the bond among people stronger through this experience, whereas in Japan people tend to avoid it.
