gripping
こんにちは。
英語カフェでの一節です。
（S: スタッフさん、A: お客さん、K: 私）
S: Do you watch Indian movies, Bollywood?
A: Yes.
S: Oh, really. I'm a big fun of Bollywood. Do you have your favorite one?
A: I don't have a favorite one. But I like that they are always singing and dancing.
S: Yeah, the stars are really nice. Last time I watched xxxxx. It was a love story, but it was not only a love story. It was really cool. There were no particular moments I wanted to stop watching. Everything was so gripping.
K: Oh, really. Sounds interesting. How do you watch Indian movies?
A: I'm a member of Amazon prime.
S: I have Netflix.
ボリウッド（Bollywood）とはインド映画のことで、ハリウッドにかけてそう呼ぶらしいです。
gripping は文字通りグリップ、つまり「心をつかむ、引きつける」という意味です。その前の文で「途中で見るのをやめたいと思わなかった」と言っておられ、それを1ワードに要約して gripping と表現されておられます。
私のような英会話素人は、interesting のような中学英語で済ませてしまいがちですが、細かいニュアンスを伝えるには、このような表現も覚えておきたいですね。
私は映画はあまり見ないのですが、今や映画はネットで見るのが当たり前になっているようです。
I feel you
こんにちは。
今日も英語カフェに行ってきました。
今回話した外国人スタッフさんは日本の大学に研究員として来られている方でした。日本の文化を学び自国に紹介しているそうです。
短いですが会話の一節です。
（S: スタッフさん、K: 私）
S: I hear that the software engineering is really a detailed work.
K: Yeah. But basically, I just don't like to communicate with others. I just want to concentrate on the technical things.
S: I see. In my university, we sometimes have to do a group project and I really hate that. I want to do everything by myself. So I feel you.
スタッフさんとは、グループワークが嫌いという点で意見が一致しました。
私は仕事に関しては、メンバーと意見を調整しながらよりよいものを練り上げていくというプロセスが退屈で好きでありません。
自分で全てを決定し、その代わり結果がどうなろうとも自己責任で全て受け入れるというスタイルの方が、スリリングであり、やりがいを感じます。
要するに個人主義（Individualist）であり、組織に向いてないんですね。
同情や共感を伝えるのには I feel you がシンプルに使えそうですね。

Main gate and West gate
こんにちは。
今日の出来事です。なぞなぞ風に。
Today, I visited our customer company to have a meeting.
I was in a hurry, so I took a taxi from the station to the company.
I told the taxi driver to go to the Main gate of the company.
After I got off the taxi, I found that the gate was not the Main gate, but it was the West gate which was only open to the employees.
To make it for the meeting, I had to run around the company from gate to gate.
But in spite of the effort, I got late for the meeting by five minutes.
Q: Why did the taxi driver get the wrong gate?
A: In Japanese, both the Main gate and the West gate are called "Sei-mon"!
