「たとえ～なら」という譲歩や、「もし～するとすれば」という仮定の話をする際の表現には、Assume / Suppose / Provide / Grant / Givenなどが使われる。
使い方は、命令文もしくはingの分詞構文の形で、ifと同じように条件を表す接続詞の役割を果たす。
Assume (推測する、決めてかかる)
Assuming that what you say is correct, this plan will be difficult to carry out.
たとえ君の言うことが正しいとしても、この経過の実行は難しい。
Assuming that the economy continues to weaken, what division will be most affected?
今のまま景気が落ち込むと仮定すると、一番影響を受けるのはどの部門ですか？
Suppose（想定する、仮定する、思う）
Supposing that/ Supposed that + SV: もし～ならば
Supposing it will become more difficult to obtain capital for materials, what are our options?
資材の調達がこれ以上困難になると仮定すると、どのような選択肢が考えられますか？
Let’s suppose we can’t recover our investment, how will that affect our facility investments?
我々の投下資本が回収できないとすると、設備投資にはどのような影響があるでしょうか？
Provide（提供する、与える）
Providing that/ Provided that + SV: もし～ならば
You can borrow the car provided that you promise to drive carefully
運転に気をつけてくれさえすれば、車を使っていいですよ
Grant（とりあえず仮定する、授与する）
Grant 名＋to be: 名が～であると仮定する granting that:
Even granting that wheels are intelligent mammals, it does not follow that we should not eat them.
たとえ、クジラが知的な哺乳類だとしても、だからといってそれを食べてはいけないということにはならない。
Given（与える）
Given that + SV: ～だとすると、Given＋名詞:～という条件が与えられれば（もし～なら）
Given the opportunity, I’d like to work for some company in America.
機会があれば、どこかのアメリカの企業で働きたい。
