教育の機会は貧富にかかわらず機会均等であるべきだ。
だが、現実はどうなのか？
実際のところ日本の国立大学は低所得層向けである。そして私立大学は中所得層向けである。高所得層向けの大学は日本国内には存在しない。
アメリカの主たる私立大学は原則として高所得層向けである。そのことは下の表を見れば一目瞭然だ。下の表は親の年収が9100万円（1ドル150円換算）以上の学生の割合(%)を示したものだ。出典はThe New York Times。
仮に、年収500万円以下の大都市圏に住む家庭で育った日本人の高校生が親の年収9100万円以上の学生の割合(%)が23%のColgate Collegeに入学したとして、周囲の学生と折り合って行けるのか？食事のマナー、話し方、道徳感、倫理観、宗教観などすべての面で多分折り合いがつかず息苦しいだけだろう。
