fail はCatenative Verbだ。だが、果たしてfail to do somethingの場合failはTransitive VerbなのかIntransitive Verbなのか？
Longman DictionaryにはThe letter failed to arrive.の場合のfailはIntransitive Verbだと書かれている。さらにDoctors failed to save the girl’s life.の場合もIntransitive Verbだと書かれている。
Cambridge DictionaryにはShe failed to reach the Wimbledon Final this year.のfailはIntransitive Verbだと書かれている。
Oxford DictionaryにもIf you fail to comply, you can be fined.のfailはIntransitive Verbだと書かれている。
日本人が日本語で書いた英文法参考書を何冊読もうとも本当の英語は永遠に分かるようにはならない、と感じる例がCatenative Verbだ。一般の日本人だけでなく日本人の学校教師、大学教員、予備校講師ですらCatenative Verbなんていう英文法用語を見たことも聞いたこともない、というのが実態ではないだろうか。数人程度はいるようだが「俺、それ知ってるよ」というレベルの解説しかしていない。Catenative Verbが特殊な動詞だという認識、知識がないのだ。とは言え、英米で流布している文法書でもCatenative Verbについて詳細な解説をしているものはあまり無い。従って、正直なところ、よく分からない。

The letter failed to arrive.
The package failed to arrive on time.
He failed to arrive on time.
The department failed to meet its sales targets.
という例文を見てto arrive、to arrive on time、to meet its sales targetsの意味を考えようとしてしまうだろうが、それてはダメなのだ。 failed toの意味が何を意味するのか？と考えなきゃいけないのである。
fail toとはdo notあるいはcannotというmodal meaningを持つ言葉なのだ。
The letter did not arrive.
The package did not arrive on time.
He did not arrive on time.
The department did not meet its sales targets.
ここでmodalって何だ？と言ってるような者は英文法を全く理解していない人間だ。modalが理解できない高校生が東大過去問、京大過去問、早慶過去問をいくらやろうが肝心の「英語のセンス」は身につかない。その無駄なことを何十年も繰り返しているのが日本の受験生だ。いい加減で受験対策の”力づく英語学習”をやめてはどうか？
