When browsing places to spend the recent national holiday, we opted for a remote Tokorozawa Park. The temperatures on that day jumped to over 20 degrees and it felt like a perfect day for a picnic. It turned out the setting couldn’t be better – massive open space for sitting and basking in the sun, full of kites and rubber-propelled model airplanes to watch. Also, we were just a few steps away from the Tokorozawa Aviation Museum. If you’re someone who appreciates an airplane hobby you’d feel right in your element. The museum doesn’t offer a lot of thrills for adventure seekers but for those familiar with aviation history and engineering it’s a great place to stop by. I went back home happy.

Except some cute kangaroos in Saitama!

Enjoy the cuteness!

(Kind of looks like they're all sleeping in a coffin ...)

Love them or hate them, sweet potatoes are a part of the staple diet in Japan. If you happen to enjoy their starchy texture and their subtle naturally sweet taste, autumn presents bountiful opportunities. There are quite a few spots in Tokyo where you can find a good bargain if you’re willing to get your hands dirty and dig the spuds out all by yourself. This year found my deal near Tsutsujigaoka Station where a bagful of large specimen cost me just 500 yen! Yeepee!

But this time I enjoyed myself rather more than the last. For one thing, I didn't have to drive quite so far. Secondly, I visited the Ibaraki Nature Museum!

These two lively chaps were unfortunately replicas but it was still quite impressive when faced with the true scale of them.

There were also some animatronic versions battling it out.

On top of all of the dinosaur and creature exhibits there were loads of fascinating rocks, and crystals too.

Outside there are even some open grassy spaces for kids to go wild in and tire themselves out for the car journey home!

Ticket entry was very reasonable but the food prices were quite steep. Maybe next time I'll bring a picnic!

If you find yourself up that way, then I definitely recommend the Nature Museum for a day out.
