本日は 実践ビジネス英語 Watch Out for Scams（詐欺にご用心）の第2回目です。
■ legit
legitimateの略語で、 「まともな」、「合法の」という意味です。
次のような例文が挙げられていました。
He has legitimate concerns about the new model.
■ pay off a gambling debt
「賭博の借金を返す」という意味です。
■ wire the money
「電子送金する」という意味です。
■ common ploy
「よくある手[策略]」という意味です。ployは、「策略」という意味です。
次のような例文が挙げられていました。
She threatened to quit, but it was just a ploy to get a raise.
■ swindler
「詐欺師」、「ペテン師」の意味です。動詞はswindleです。
次のような例文が挙げられていました。
Dozens of investors were swindled in the fake stock deal.
■ that's quite a story.
「それはひどい[大変な、すごい]話ですね。」という意味です。
■ granny
口語で「おばあちゃん」という意味です。
■ be on the ball
抜かり[抜け目、油断]がないという意味です。Keep your eyes on the ball. は文字通りには、「ボールから目を離すな」ですが、イディオムとしては「油断するな」という意味で使います。
■ disown
「（子供を）勘当する」、「縁を切る」という意味で、refute any connection withということです。
次のような例文が挙げられていました。
His father disowned him because he wouldn't join the family business.
また、disownは、モノに対しても使います。以下のような例文が挙げられていました。
She tried to disown the project after it failed..
