本日は、実践ビジネス英語 Analyzing Public Apologies（謝罪を分析する）の第5回目です。
■ makings of
「･･･の素質（要素）」という意味で、makingsと複数形で使うのがポイントです。
良い意味でも悪い意味でも使います。次のような例文が挙げられていました。
That restaurant has all the makings of a great success.
■ rise to the occasion
「難局にうまく対処する」という意味で、deal well with some difficult situationということです。
次のような例文が挙げられていました。
It was a very tight schedule、but our staff rose to the occasion and made the deadline.
■ hammer out
「･･･を打ち出す」、「（案など）を苦心して考え出す」という意味で、make significant efforts to achieve somethingということです。
次のような例文が挙げられていました。
Management and the union hammered out a compromise on this year's pay raise.
■ fiddle with
「･･･を改ざんする」という意味で、meddle withやtamperなどと同義です。
また、fiddled with one's booksというと、「帳簿を改ざんする（不正な会計処理をする）」という意味になります。 なお、fiddle withには、tinkerやfixと同様、「修理する」という意味もあります。
次のような例文が挙げられていました。
Let me fiddle with that computer a bit.
また、pad one's expense reportsと言えば、「経費報告書を水増しする」という意味になります。
■ take guts
「勇気がいる」という意味です。
■ mensch
「高潔な人」という意味で、主として男性に使うようです。
■ step up to the plate
「先頭に立って行動する」という意味です。
■ deliver the goods
「期待に沿う」、「約束を実行する」という意味で、deliverだけでも同じ意味に使います。
■ do the tric
「功を奏する」、「うまくいく」という意味です。
次のような例文が挙げられていました。
Offering him a higher salary did the trick.
■ backfire
「逆効果となる」、「裏目に出る」という意味です。
■ add fuel to the fire
「火に油を注ぐ」という意味で、add fuel to the flamesとも言います。
次のような例文が挙げられていました。
If we miss another deadline, it will really add fuel to the flames.
なお、add insult to injuryは、「踏んだり蹴ったりの仕打ちをする」という意味になります
