本日は実践ビジネス英語 Analyzing Public Apologies（謝罪を分析する）の第2回目です。
■ free-for-all brainstorming session
「制約なしの（忌憚のない）自由なブレーンストーミング」のことで、free-for-allは、no rulesとかno limitationsを意味します。free-for-allは名詞としても使われ、uncontrolled competitionとか uncontrolled argumentといった意味になります。
次のような例文が挙げられていました。
The negotiations deteriorated into a free-for-all between management and labor representatives.
■ blow up in someone's face
「急に悪い状況になって（人の）面目をつぶす」という意味です。
■ down the road
「この先」、「将来いつか」という意味で、along the way とか at some time in the futureと同義です。
■ strike someone
「（人を）驚かせる」という意味で、make a strong impressionということです。
次のような例文が挙げられていました。
I was struck by his in-depth knowledge of art.
■ fall all over oneself
「躍起になる」、「必死に頑張る」という意味で、put an enormous amount of energy into doing somethingということです。
次のような例文が挙げられていました。
The company fell all over itself trying to hire Mr. X as its CEO.
■ at large
「全般の」、「一般の」という意味で、in generalとも言います。次のような例文が挙げられていました。
Society at large isn't interested in that issue.
■ be under the microscope
「詳細に調べられている」という意味でbe examined very closelyということです。
次のような例文が挙げられていました。
Everyone's budget is under the microscope as the company tries to cut costs.
■ take pleasure in
「･･･に喜びを感じる」という意味で、次のような例文が挙げられていました。
He takes pleasure in helping people.
■ blooper
「間違い」、「どじ」という意味で、主にアメリカ・カナダにおいてラジオ・テレビ放送でのアナウンサーの間違いのことを意味します。また、blunder, gaffe、slipup、faux pasといった言葉も「へま」、「失言」、「失態」を意味します。
