本日は、実践ビジネス英語 Analyzing Public Apologies（謝罪を分析する）の第1回目です。
■ on short notice
「急な予告で」、「直前の連絡で」という意味です。
以下の例文は、緊急会議等を招集した人が冒頭に述べる決まり文句の一つです。
Thank you for coming to this meeting on such short notice.
■ a spate of
「相次ぐ･･･」とか「多数の･･･」という意味です。通常は「悪いことが続く」という意味で使います。次のような例文が挙げられていました。
There's been a spate of insider trading scandals lately.
■ high-profile
「目立った」という意味で、very well-knownということです。
The high-profile merger was covered extensively in the press.
反対語は、low-profile（目立たない）です
■ slipup in quality control
「品質管理上の見落とし」のことです。動詞（句）はslip up（見落とす）で、make an errorとかmistakeということです。
次のような例文が挙げられていました。
We slipped up and used last year's figures in the report.
■ you name it
「ありとあらゆるもの」、「何でもかんでも」という意味で、etc.（et cetra）、and so forth、and so on、and the likeなど同様の意味の表現は色々あります。
■ hardly a day goes by without
「･･･なしで過ぎる日はない」という意味で、something happens almost every dayということです。
また、not a day goes by（毎日）という表現もあります。
Not a day goes by when she doesn't complain about her workload.
■ eat humble pie
「屈辱を味わう」、「恐れ入って詫びる」という意味です。humble pie（屈辱）のhumbleは、umble（鹿などの内臓）に由来しているようです。また、同じような意味としてeat crowという表現もあります。
次のような例文が挙げられていました。
Our manager had to eat crow after the client discovered a big mistake in our work.
■ culpability
「過失があること」という意味です。次のような例文が挙げられていました。
Who will be held culpable for the company's losses?
■ get one's message across
「メッセージを伝える」という意味です。次のような例文が挙げられていました。
The company has decided to use social media more to get its message across to consumers.
