本日は、実践ビジネス英語 Sharing Too Much? （シェアしすぎかも）の第4回目です。
■ without giving something a moment's thought
「～のことを少しも考慮せずに」という意味で、without a moment's hesitationも同義です。
■ couldn't resist
「～せずにはいられない」という意味で、次のような例文が挙げられていました。
I couldn't resist teasing him about his funny ties.
■ by way of reply
「答として」という意味で、ここで by way of は a means ofとかfor the purpose of の意味です。
次のような例文が挙げられていました。
He took her to lunch by way of an apology.
また、by way ofには「～を経由して」という意味もあります。
■ blame
「非難する」という意味ですが、to blameは、「責任がある」という意味になります。
次のような例文が挙げられていました。
I think the marketing department is to blame for this product's failure.
また、play the blame gameというと、「責任のなすり合いをする」という意味になります。
■over-indulgent
「過度に甘やかす」という意味で、overを使った他の用語には、over-thinkやover-eatがあります。
■ on someone's mind
「人が考えていること」という意味で、What's on your mind? はよく使われる表現です。 What's up? も同じような場面で使います。
■ spelling bee
「スペリング競争（つづち方を間違えた人から抜けていく競技）」の意味です。
また、have a bee in one's bonnetというと、「何かの（間違った）考えに取りつかれている」という意味になります。次のような例文が挙げられていました。
He has got a bee in his bonnet that the boss doesn't like him.
■ get out of hand
「手に負えなくなる」、「収拾がつかなくなる」 get out of controlとも言います。
■ pal
「（親しい）友人」の意味の口語です。米国ではpen-pal、英国ではpen-friendが一般的なようです。
また、palは「つきあう」という意味の動詞としても用いられます。次のような例文が挙げられていました。
That politician has been accused of palling around too much with business lobbyists.
