本日から実践ビジネス英語は、Lesson 7 Senior Moments （物忘れ）になります。
今日はその第1回目です。
■ senior moment
口語で「（特に高齢者の）物忘れ（度忘れやうっかり行動）」を意味します。1990年代の終わりごろから使われ始め、2000年のWord of the Yearの一つだそうです。
■ be in a fix
「困っている」、「苦境に立っている」という意味で、be in troubleとか be in a difficult situationと,、あるいはbe in hot water [seat]いうことです。また、be in a bindとも言います。次のような例文が挙げられていました。.
He was in a real fix when he lost his passport.
■ for the life of one
「どうしても」、「何としても」という意味です。次のような例文が挙げられていました。
I can not for the life of me understand why they hired him.
■ widow and widower
「連れ合いに先立たれて再婚していな男女」のことで、widowは「寡婦（かふ）」、widowerは「寡夫（かふ）」です。日本語は同じ発音なので、区別しにくいですね。
■ ask for a woman's hand in marriage
「女性に結婚の申し込みをする」という意味で、かなり古めかしい言葉のようです。また、フォーマルな表現として、ask for a lady's hand in marriageという表現もあるようです。
なお、match made in heaven（人又は物の理想的な組み合わせ）という言い回しもあります。
■ pop the question
口語で「結婚を申し込む」という意味です。この場合のthe questionは、
Will you marry me? ということです。以下のような例文が挙げられていました。
She was tired of waiting for him to pop the question, so she left.
■ term of endearment
「愛情を示す言葉」、「愛情の呼びかけ」という意味で、例えば、妻（恋人）に対してはhoneyとかdarlingとかsweetheartといった言葉が、小さな女の子に対してはPrincessなどがあります。
■ when his wife is off in the kitchen
「彼の奥さんが台所に行っている間に」という意味で、offはawayの意味で使われています。
■ hang one's head
「（恥かしさで）顔を下に向ける」という意味です。次のような場面で使われていました。
His buddy hangs his head and says, "To tell you the truth, I forgot her real name about ten years ago."
