引き続き、NHKの『実践ビジネス英語』 Middle-Class Squeeze（中流階級の苦境）です。

■ Even families making six figures are more comfortable calling themselves upper middle class.
make six figures(digits)：「6桁（10万ドル以上）稼ぐ」という意味です。earn six figuresともいいます。
なお、一口に6桁(10万ドル以上)といってもかなり幅があるので、low six figuresとかhigh six figuresという言い回しも紹介されていました。
■ They don't want to stand out from the crowd too much.
前回ご紹介したstand out（目立つ）が早速出てきました。
stand out from the crowd:「ひときわ目立つ」の意味で、放送の中では、be conspicuously different from most other people or thingsと説明されていました。
他に、How to make your resume stand out from the crowd. という表現が紹介されていました。日本人は基本的に目立つのが好きではないのですね。そういえば、MBAにapplyする時、『他者と差別化するため、ずうずうしいと感じる位の（自分を売り込む）resumeを書きなさい。』と言われたのが懐かしいですね。
■ date back to
「～にさかのぼる」の意味で、go back toともいいます。
■ look at the past through rose-colored glasses
「楽観的に見る」という意味です。日本語で「色眼鏡で見る」というと、「先入観（prejudice）や偏見（bias）によって物事を見る」というnegativeな意味がありますが、英語のこの表現は、「バラ色のメガネ」で見ると、楽観的に見えるということで、ポジティブな意味になるという説明がありました。rosy viewは「楽観論」となります。
■ get by
「暮らしていく」という意味で、manage so that your financial resources are enoughと説明されていました。また、「何とかする」という意味で、manage to get alongとか manage to accomplish what you need to doといった意味としても使うと説明されていました。
■ People still cling to the middle-class dream.
cling to：「しがみつく」の意味で、hold tight to somethingとかrefuse to let it goと説明されていました。stick to も同じような意味ですね。
■ bedrock
根幹、根本という意味で、the solid rock underneath soilと説明されていました。 America is the bedrock of the global economy.という表現も紹介されていました。
■ the salt of the earth
直訳すると「地の塩」ですが、旧約聖書の中の言葉で、「高潔な人」という意味です。こういう文化的（宗教的）背景に由来する表現はなかなか分かりません。放送では、the very best peopleとかpeople who embody virtues like kindness, generosity, ･･･と紹介されていました。
