どんな意味かと言うと・・・
To not have a cat in Hell’s chance
=～をする機会を逃す、～をする見込みが全くない
「to not have a cat in Hell's chance of doing something」と使います。
同じ表現に「snowball chance」がありますが、語源は「to not have a cat in Hell's chance」になるそうです。
Off the top of my head
＝ぱっと頭に浮かぶ、とっさに出てくる、思いつきで
直訳すると「頭のてっぺんから離れる」となりますね。
何らかの考えや記憶が、考えるまでもなく頭のてっぺんからすぐ出てくることを意味します。
こんな風に使います
A: Well, I failed the exam. That’s it, I give up.
B: Give up? Why?
A: I needed that qualification to get that job at IBM. There isn’t a cat in Hell’s chance I can get the place I wanted now!
B: Hey, don’t give up! There are other companies like IBM you could work for without that qualification.
