Vol.52 Bryant Park / English Version
Bryant Park
Because I’ve written about New York’s famous Central Park many times, I’d like
to introduce you Bryant Park .
Bryant Park is also a favorite spot of landscape architect, Michael Spitzer, who
you met previously. “I like the park for it’s overall classical design,” Michael told
me.
“The double rows of sycamore trees create a shady space, as well as, a
transition between the busy streets along each side of the park and its open,
sunny, green interior,” he said. “The park is planted with colorful, seasonal woody
shrubs, herbaceous perennials and 20,000 bulbs that bloom in the spring,” he
explained.
As a garden design expert, Michael always looks at the design of the park with a
critical, but loving eye.
It is located right behind the New York Library between 40th & 42nd street and
5th Avenue and 6th Avenue. I’ve been there often for fashion shows, because
until last February’s final Fall 2010 shows held in tents in this park.
In September, the New York Spring 2011 Collections will move to Lincoln Center.
Since the tents came down, the area has been restored and is now more
beautiful than ever.
There are many ways to spend time in Bryant Park. At lunchtime, the park is
crowded with people eating lunch.
Families with children are riding “Le Carrousel”.
Some people enjoy ping pong with their friends.
Other people read books on the benches.
On the spacious, Central Lawn, various events, including dance & musical
performances from Broadway shows, take place. Yoga and Tai Chi classes
are held in the morning and evening during Spring and Summer, with many
people participating.
Every Monday evening, you can see a free classic movie at the HBO
(cable channel) Bryant Park Summer Film Festival (from June 21 to
August 23rd at 9:00pm)
In the winter, there is ice skating rink and the Holiday Shops at Bryant Park
during the Christmas season.
In the park, there is Bryant Park Grill restaurant, with a patio and roof top
terrace, is popular for business lunches.
Bryant Park Café is a more casual outdoor bar & restaurant.
To have many beautiful, safe parks, loved by the citizens, expresses the cultural
level of the city. Bryant Park is not so big, however, it is the great example for
New York cultural level.
When you are in New York, why don’t you read a book (from the New York
Library or Kinokuniya book store across the street) or eat a sandwich like New
Yorkers do in Bryant Park. It’s also a great place for “Man Watching”!
