Driver in Aug. double fatality

Paul Anthony Harris, accused of killing a Liberty University professor and her teenage son in a drunken-driving crash last month, was arraigned Tuesday on charges of manslaughter and maiming.

The 42-year-old Roanoke man is blamed by Roanoke County police for the Aug. 8 deaths of Liberty professor Jill Jones and her son Nicholas. Harris was charged with two counts of aggravated involuntary manslaughter and one of maiming as a result of intoxicated driving.

Police have said Harris was traveling west on U.S. 460 in Bonsack and hit two vehicles that were turning from Alternate U.S. 220 onto eastbound 460. In one car were Jill Jones, a 41-year-old education professor, and Nicholas Jones, 16, a student at Liberty Christian Academy. Both were killed.

The other vehicle in the collision was driven by Melanie Rice, 42, of Montvale, who was hospitalized after the crash.

ADAMS COUSIN GUILTY OVER COFFE

A DISSIDENT republican who hurled abuse at Gerry Adams during a debate on policing pleaded guilty yesterday to possession of a coffee jar bomb.

Liam Hannaway, a relative of the Sinn Fein President, entered the plea as a man and woman were acquitted of similar charges at Belfast Crown Court.

Following his guilty pleas, prosecution QC David Hunter told the court the Crown would be offering no evidence against 33-year-old Karen Lavery or Kevin Hannaway, 29, both from Rinnalea Walk in Belfast and Judge Tom Burgess recorded verdicts of not guilty.

Requesting that sentencing be adjourned until pre-sentence probation reports have been completed, defence QC Patrick Lyttle revealed Liam Hannaway faces other charges of a similar christian audigier nature and asked the judge if all matters could be dealt with together.

Yesterday sources said Hannaway was one of a handful of people who heckled Mr Adams during a debate at Clonard Monastery prior to Sinn Fein's decision to support policing.
