Forgetful MP survives

Ireland's defence minister, who falsely accused a political rival of running a brothel, has survived a no-confidence vote in the Irish parliament and kept his job. Lawmakers voted 80-67 today in support of Defence Minister Willie O'Dea, who has denied committing perjury, even though he swore an affidavit claiming he never made any brothel accusations.

O'Dea was forced into a U-turn after a journalist produced an audio tape of them. Opposition leaders ridiculed O'Dea's claim that he had simply forgotten about accusing Sinn Fein national treasurer Maurice Quinlivan of employing prostitutes in a Limerick flat. In December, O'Dea paid Quinlivan undisclosed damages and apologised to Dublin High Court for making a false sworn denial.

Call for sex health strategy

Calls for an urgent upgrade of Northern Ireland's sexual health services have been backed by Derry's Sinn Fein health spokesperson, Councillor Billy Page.

Northern Ireland's Children's Commissioner, Patricia Lewley, said this week that sexual health services here are failing to meet the needs of our young people.

Voicing concerns about the number of teenage mums, she said that while the number of under-17s having babies fell last year to 142, it remained too high.

Colr Billy Page believes that The Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety need to heed the latest warnings and produce a sexual health strategy.

"The DHSS and Public Safety need to heed the latest warnings... that sexual health services are failing to meet the needs of young people in the North," he said.

"This topic should no longer be swept under the carpet as it was in the past. Education can be a powerful tool in assisting our young generation in facing; coping and dealing with such issues as sexually transmitted infections, crisis pregnancy and relationships," he said.

Considering recent research indicating that as many as a quarter of young people in the North have their first sexual experience before they reach the age of 16, Colr Page believes education is the best way to prepare young people.

"The fact is that a significant minority of young teenagers are not being taught about sexuality, relationships and responsible sex which could have serious negative effects later on in their lives," he added.

Button wants that winning feel

JENSON BUTTON is desperate to savour that winning feeling again as he continues to stumble his way towards the Formula One world title.

For the first time this season Button not only failed to pick up a point, he failed to finish a race after crashing out of Sunday's Belgian Grand Prix at Spa.

The first-lap shunt saw him punted off the track by Romain Grosjean in his Renault, with the accident also snaring Lewis Hamilton in his McLaren and the Toro Rosso of Jaime Alguersuari.

After his rampant run of six victories in the first seven races, Button has since taken just 11 points from the last five.

The 29-year-old is fortunate not to have been overhauled by now as his three main rivals in Rubens Barrichello, Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber have been falling over themselves to catch Button.

Lewis With five grand prix remaining, Button's lead is still 16 points over Brawn GP team-mate Barrichello, with the feeling he could take 11 points again from those five and still end up champion.

But that is not how Button wants to claim the title, commenting: "I suppose having six wins in seven races is the reason why it's taken them so long to close up.

"But we've got to start getting back to being competitive. I know all I need to do is finish fourth or fifth, but that's not what I want to do. I want to win races.

"You've got to say 'think about the championship,' but I still want to win races. It's what I'm here to do, and it's what I love doing, competing at the front.

"So I'm going to be aggressive. I'm not going to suddenly back off after qualifying and take it easy in the Hamilton Watches races because even if I'm in fifth I still want to do well.

"I still want to win races and I still want to be competitive, and that's exactly what I hope will happen at the Italian Grand Prix in Monza (September 13)."

It is unsurprising Button is able to remain so upbeat because luck would appear to be on his side, as witnessed on Sunday following his crash.

The Red Bulls were expected to coast to victory, yet Vettel only managed third and Webber ninth following a drive-through penalty for an unsafe release from the pits.

As for Barrichello, he only collected two points for seventh after a clutch problem at the start relegated him from fourth to last by the first corner.

Of course, Button has his own problems as he slated his car in the wake of a qualifying performance that saw him start a season- low 14th.

He knows there can be no room for frustration, adding: "I've just got to get my head down and work with the team to solve our issues and work on the set-up for Monza.

"We've already discussed what we're going to do there, so I'm looking forward to it.

Hamilton "I'm positive and excited about the challenge of the next few races. I'm not frustrated or negative."

Button is fully expecting the McLarens and Ferraris to dominate at Monza given the power boost provided by KERS, leaving the rest to fight for the scraps, which would again play into his hands.

"I don't think the Red Bulls will be the main rivals on a circuit that should suit us," assessed Button.
