Sevilla crush Deportivo to qualify for quarter-finals of Spanish Cup

MADRID, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) -- Sevilla chalked up their third win over Deportivo la Coruna in a week to book their place in the last eight in the quarter-finals of the Spanish King's Cup knockout competition.

Sevilla won the first leg of their last 16 tie 2-1 at home last week, before beating Deportivo 3-1 in La Corunaon Saturday night.

Wednesday again saw Sevilla visit La Coruna and the side coached by Manolo Jimenez made its intentions clear after just 34 seconds when Jesus Navas scored the first of the night. Luis Fabiano scored two more goals before half time to leave the tie totally resolved in Sevilla's favor.

Sevilla is joined in the next round by Betis, who followed up a 1- 0 away win to Real Union with a 1-0 home win. Arzu scored the only goal of the game midway through the first half.

Mallorca made good a 3-1 first leg win against Almeria with a 1- 1 draw in the second round that saw Gregorio Mnzano's side into the next phase, while Sporting Gijon also progressed to the last eight despite a 2-1 away defeat in Valladolid.

However, had it not been for an injury time goal from Jorge Garcia, Sporting would have been out of the competition after Valladolid had taken a 2-0 lead through Nestor Dortmund Canobbio and Jorge Leon.

Meanwhile watches-w a first half goal from Espanyol's Roman Martinez saw his side through on away goals against Poli Ejido. Espanyol had lost the away leg 2-1 to the third category team, but Martinez's goal saw the Primera Liga outfit through.

Espanyol will face FC Barcelona, another side who made good their result from the first leg.

Barcelona won 3-1 in the Vicente Calderon Stadium last week, but found themselves behind in the CampNou after Sinama Pongolle ahead.

However, Bojan Krkic leveled five minutes later and Eidur Gudjohnsen put Barcelona ahead 15 minutes from time to confirm the 2- 1 final score.

Sevilla draws at home but qualifies for last 16 of Champions League

MADRID, Nov. 4 (Xinhua) -- A second half goal from Stuttgart midfielder Zdravko Kumanovich denied Sevilla a home win, but couldn't stop the Spanish side from qualifying for the last 16 of the Champions League on Wednesday night.

The goal was a fair reward for the German side, that had lost 3- 1 at home to Sevilla a fortnight ago, but which was able to react with a spirited second half after being under pressure in the first period.

Sevilla entertains Getafe in first Copa del Rey semifinal

MADRID, Feb. 2 (Xinhua) -- Sevilla coach Manolo Jimenez was cautious ahead of his side's Copa del Rey semifinal at home to Getafe.
