- There are the one who manage and make decisions for the team.

- During the rehearsals.

In a sense, a conductor is like a CEO in a comapy. There are different types of leadership, but how do you lead an orchestra to create good music? 

- Actually to me the conductor is more like the coach of a sport team. The CEO of business is the person who runs the business. OK? But usually there are departments, and there are different people who head the departments. It's why I make this difference between business and sport. A sport team is owned usually by a corporation or indivisuals or whatever. And that's the CEO, of course, but underneath that, is the person who's managing the team. Baseball, football or whatever it is. That's the person who has to decide this is how we are going to practice, this is the kind of players are going to run. We try to perfect our playing of the sport so that when it comes to the game, we have a real plan on what to do and how we're going to acomplish it. That's the role of the conductor. There are people above me, even as music world there is always somebody is my boss. But I'm the boss of the orchestra. So I am the one who can say this is how we are going to play, I try to rehearse so prepare as possible for the conserts. And at the consert again like the coach of the sport team, I am kind of on the side a little bit. Yes, people see me conducting just like you see the coach running up and down, yelling at people. But there is by the time of the game, or the time of the concert there is not much you can really do. You have to adjust to the events. So it's a little closer in that way. The most important work of the conductor is done in the rehearsals, just like an important work of the manager of the team is done at the practice sessions. We use the games to maybe inspire our players a little bit and make adjustments at the last moment if we need to.

On the side or on the sidelines means that you’re not actively involved in a situation, but you are contributing to it in some way. Maestro Slatkin uses the example of coaches. They may have an active role while on the side or on the sidelines of the field while the athletes play on it.

To yell means to speak in a very loud voice. People yell for various reasons, such as expressing anger or to cheer on their favorites sports teams. Maestro Slatkin mentioned that we hear coaches yelling sometimes. This gives the players a sense of urgency or understanding that the situation is serious.

To give inspiration or motivation. To make someone want to do something or make them want to improve in some way. To awaken a creative urge in someone. For exmaple, My music teacher inspired me to become a professional singer.

Regarding natural wines, I'm going to do three online and two in person interviews by next monday. It makes sence that natural wine is a priority. I'll seve the Japanese restaurant project for the future.

What is your impression if today's email?

To-Do lists. Like the one Ron wrote are quite helpful for both the sender and receiver. We want to make sure everything is clear concise and organized. If I received a list like that, I would need to make sure I understood the assignment and not try to add or subtract anything. Follow up with confirmation and ask questions, wherever necessary, email shouldn’t take up much time. So having additional information in attachments or shared folders is definitely the way to go.

 

Right.  Always double check if necessary while trying to keep the exchanges brief.

Emilly, Risa, hello, hello. When was the last time I saw you? Two years ago almost? How time flies. The last few years have been very testing. But I can finally say there's light at the end of the tunnel. Room occupancy is around seventy percent. The highest since March 2020. 

Sounds very positive. How about the restraunts in your hotel? 
Much better. Considering that many restraunts in Tokyo were on the verge of banckruptcy a year ago, the feauture seems bright. And receptions and banquets? 
Sadly not as good. But weddings and afterparties are coming back and selling a lot of wines. More affordable wines than expensive champagne of course. But yes.

Ummm. Well I think when the economy recovers, we'll see more champagne and Burgundy go out.

-The internet shold have been used to find different ways to present music to the public.

They say that the majority of performing institutes feel a great pressure to find enough pepole to fill venue. What do you think you should do to attract bigger audiences for classical conserts in a post pandemic era.

-This is one of the most important questions about time. But it's a question that has been building for years. I can't think of any time in my life when people didn't say What do the audiences get younger, one of the halls are always gonna be full. It's always been difficult. But it's increasingly difficult over the last say 40 to 45 years. Part of it, it's because in many countries the education system in the arts has failed. The arts have taken second, third, forth place. So the first thing we have to changes is to really speak about arts seriously in school. That's the firts thing.

The second thing, acutally it's something in the way the question was asked.

Do we have to fill the hall. Filling the hall almost implies that there's a financial end to this. You'll do better if the hall's full because you sold out the tickets. Selling tickets doesn't really do for the most part much to make the financial picture better. Sold out house maybe is 35 percent of budget for that particular event. You have the cost of circuit orchestra .. soloist, stagehands all these things. It's a lot of money. So maybe we need to rethink how we look at the world. In my case, of classical music. And COVID to me became a missed opportunity for so many organizations. Here we are. We chould not go to the concerts, live. We could watch them on the internet. But what we see just concerts. Same thing you would see if you went to the hall with several cameras instead. That was a mistake. We should have been using the internet to find different ways to present music to the public who are conversant with the technology. They should not just be recording the concerts.

I finished the interviews as planed. Most restaurant stook organic and natural wines. Apparently they are regular customers are health conscious and have a high awareness of the SDGs. As expected the majority of these wines are from the New World. But surprisingly they also stock wines from Bordeaux and Burgundy. We're WCS is supposed to be strong. The interview records are saved in a shared folder under interviews of natural wines. So please have a look when you have time.

I put togerther some datas as per the attached slides. I think the data by aged group has the gretest impact on the strategy. The graph on page three clearly  shows that the younger generation has a strong interest in ethical consumptions. In a long term, I believe that today's 20s and 30 somethings are the future of WCS. You send your 30s drinking natural wines, everyday New World wines before moving up the ladder into Californian and then into more prestigious French wines in your 40s and 50s. Does that sound realistic?

I think so too. However since WCS is a British company, I think stiking to whiskey and gin would be more suited to the brand than branching out to teqila or sake. 
We actually have informal relationships with gin and whiskey distilleries in Scotland.
So we could discuss possible partnerships with them.

I strongly believe that showrooming is the key to a medium to long term strategy. While online shopping has become firmly established we shouldn't overlooked that the need for fisical confirmation of products in store remain strong even among the younger generation. I think we need to adopt to a changing consumer dynamics and put together a strategy that needs a new type of shopping expectations. Check products in store, make the actual purchase in e-commerce site and have them delivered free.
