　The hottest day of the summer so far was drawing to a close and a drowsy silence lay over the large, square houses of Privet Drive.

　この夏、一番の暑い日が暮れようとしていて、プリベット通りでは、それぞれの家々が、けだるい静けさに覆われていました。

　Cars that were usually gleaming stood dusty in their drives and lawns that were once emerald green lay parched and yellowing - for the use of hosepipes had been banned due to drought.

　いつもなら、きれいに手入れがされる自動車も、家の前の路地で埃を被ったままになっていて、エメラルド・グリーンの芝生もカラカラになって黄ばんでいました　－－－－　日照りのせいで、ホースで散水することが禁止されていたからでした。

　Deprived of their usual car-washing and lawn-mowing pursuits, the inhabitants of Privet Drive had retreated into the shade of their cool houses, windows thrown wide in the hope of tempting in a non-existent breeze.

　車を洗い上げたり、芝生を刈ったりするという、いつもの楽しみを奪われたプリベット通りの住人たちは、日陰を求めて涼しい屋内に引きこもり、吹きもしない風を誘い込もうとして、窓を広々と開け放っていました。

　こんな格好のハリー・ポッターが、ご近所から好意を持たれるはずがありませんでした。　なにしろ、みすぼらしいものは法律で罰するべきだと考えるような人たちだったからでした。　しかし、この日のハリー・ポッターは、紫陽花の大きな茂みの陰に隠れるかたちで、道往く人の目にはまったく見えなくなっていました。

　In fact, the only way he would be spotted was if his Uncle Vernon or Aunt Petunia stuck their heads out of the living-room window and looked straight down into the flowerbed below.

　He was not, perhaps, very comfortable lying on the hot, hard earth but, on the other hand, nobody was glaring at him, grinding their teeth so loudly that he could not hear the news, or shooting nasty questions at him, as had happened every time he had tried sitting down in the living room to watch television with his aunt and uncle.

　熱くて固い地面に寝転がるのは、たしかにあまり快適とはいえませんでしたが、ここなら、睨みつける誰かさんも、ニュースが聞こえなくなるほどの音で歯噛みしたり、意地悪な質問をぶつけてくる誰かさんも居ないからでした。　なにしろ、伯父さん、伯母さんと一緒に居間でテレビを見ようとすると、必ずそういうことになるからでした。

　Almost as though this thought had fluttered through the open window, Vernon Dursley, Harry's uncle, suddenly spoke.

　But the baggage-handlers' strike was followed by news about the drought in the Southeast ('I hope he's listening next door!' bellowed Uncle Vernon. 'Him with his sprinklers on at three in the morning!'), then a helicopter that had almost crashed in a field in Surrey, then a famous actress's divorce from her famous husband ('As if we're interested in their sordid affairs,' sniffed Aunt Petunia, who had followed the case obsessively in every magazine she could lay her bony hands on).

　しかし、手荷物係のストライキの後は、南東部の干ばつのニュースが続き(「隣りのやつに聞かせてやりたいもんだ！」と、バーノン伯父さんが大声で言いました。　「あいつめ、朝の三時にスプリンクラーを回しやがって！」)、それから、サレー州でヘリコプターが畑に墜落しそうになったニュース、何とかいう有名な女優が、これまた有名な夫と離婚した話(「こんな不潔なスキャンダルに、誰が興味を持つものですか」と、ペチュニア伯母さんは口ではフンと言いながら、あらゆる雑誌でこの記事を熱心に読み漁っていたのでした)。
