Ｐｌａｙｂａｃｋ１９７６ ＲＡＬＬＹＥ ＳＡＮＲＥＭＯ ②

ＳＳのゴール前で止まるなど露骨なタイム操作をしてサービスポイントに到着したワルデガルドは、ムナーリを４秒リードしていた。そこでワルデガルドは決めてあった措置通り｢次のＳＳのスタートでは４秒待つように｣という指示を受けた。しかし、その最終サービス地点に監督のフィオーリオはいなかった。かわりにチーフメカニックのマイク・パークスと数人のメカニックが待機していたのである。ムナーリはサスペンションの総点検を希望し、ワルデガルドはパークスとの情報交換で時間を過ごす。

二人のドライバーの距離はわずか５ｍ。しかし、お互いに決して相手の方を見ようとはしない。

メカニックは所定のマシンチェックを行い、スタートラインにマシンを送り出す準備を整えた。ムナーリはややラフに、そして恐ろしい勢いでストラトスをタイムコントロールに向けた。ワルデガルドはその光景を見て、ムナーリが逸る気持ちを抑えきれないことを感じとった。そしてオフィシャルがカウントを終えた瞬間、ムナーリは轟音を残してスタートしていった。

次は、ワルデガルドの番だ。パークスら数人のランチア関係者が見守る中、ストラトスをコントロールラインに着けた。オフィシャルのカウントダウンが始まる。　５、４、３、 ．．．．４秒のリードを無駄にしなくてはならないことへの怒り、そして相反する ｢これをステップボードに彼らを見返すことができるかもしれない｣ という期待感とでワルデガルドの心境は複雑だった。　．．．２、１、スタート！　しかし、ワルデガルドは微動だにしない。｢なぜ、スタートしないんだ！｣　オフィシャルが叫ぶ。そして４秒が経ち、約束を守ったワルデガルドが猛然とスタートしていった。

１４分３２秒。最終ＳＳの二人の結果は、まったくの同タイムであった。（そのタイムはピントより１分以上速く、その他のドライバーからは３分以上も速かった。）これにより優勝は４秒差でワルデガルドの手に落ちた。つまりムナーリはチームオーダーの４秒リードを活かしきれなかったのである。そればかりか本当はワルデガルドがムナーリより４秒速いタイムで走ったことに気づく者もいなかった。

フィオーリオはストラトスが勝ったこと、そして監督命令の絶対的権威が確かめられたこと、さらにムナーリとワルデガルドが自分のチームにいることで満悦に浸っていた。しかし、ムナーリは ｢取り決めなどしたのが、間違いであった。車のギヤが入りにくくて、これさえ無ければ勝っていた。」と人々に不機嫌に語っていた。ワルデガルドがモンテカルロにおいて自分の敗北をいかに潔く受け入れたかを覚えている人達は、いささかムナーリの態度にがっかりしたことであろう。モンテカルロではビジネスライクに勝ちを譲ったワルデガルド。だが今回は違う。ワルデガルドはチームの約束を守り、そして勝利を得た。最終ＳＳ３７での戦い、それはワルデガルドのモンテへの復讐といえるほど鮮やかで完璧なものであった。

【ＥＰＩＬＯＧＵＥ】
舞台をサンレモからツール・ド・コルスに移したムナーリは、プライベーターのダルニッシュに追い詰められていた。ムナーリのワークス・ストラトスは２４バルブ・２８０馬力。一方、ダルニッシュのプライベート・ストラトスは１２バルブ・２５５馬力。ムナーリのストラトスに発生したミスファイアによるトップ交代とはいえ、サンレモに続く敗北はムナーリの耐え難い屈辱を意味する。ムナーリは最終ＳＳ、逆転を期して全力でコースを駆け抜ける。しかし結果はダルニッシュとの差が逆に４３秒と開いてしまった。万事休す．．．　そう思われた矢先、ダルニッシュには１分のロード・ペナルティが科せられていた。なんと第２ステージ最初のタイムコントロールの遅れが減点対象となっていたのである。チームのメイクスタイトルを決める勝利。それはムナーリの執念が生んだものと言えるだろう。

 

Ｐｌａｙｂａｃｋ１９７６ ＲＡＬＬＹＥ ＳＡＮＲＥＭＯ ①

チェザーレ・フィオーリオの率いるランチア・ワークスチームのエースは１９７６年もサンドロ・ムナーリ。フィオーリオと長く苦楽を共にしてきたイタリア人ドライバーである。しかし、ナンバー２の位置に甘んじていたスウェーデン人ドライバーのビヨルン・ワルデガルドにもトップを走れる自信と実力は充分にあった。
サンレモ・ラリー、最終のＳＳ３７。ムナーリをリードしていたワルデガルドにモンテカルロと同じようなチームオーダーが出されていた。｢スタート前に４秒待つように｣と．．．。自分が築いてきたリードだったが、ワルデガルドは正確に待って猛然とスタートしていった。

 

第１４回サンレモ・ラリーは１９７６年の世界ラリー選手権の第８戦に組み込まれていた。ここまでランチア・チームはモンテカルロ、ポルトガルで優勝するなど６２点を獲得し、２位のオペルに２０点の差をつけて選手権を有利に戦っていた。

 

【第１４回サンレモ・ラリー】
サンレモの街を基点に、北イタリアの山々を駆けめぐるスペシャルステージラリー。（モンテツェッポウの山場を含むリグュリアン海岸の北部が舞台となっている。）競技は２ステージ制で、第１ステージに２６ヶ所、第２ステージに１１ヶ所のＳＳが設定され、その合計距離はコース全長１５０９ｋｍのうち８５０ｋｍを占めている。そして、この内のダート部分はわずか１０％にも満たない６５ｋｍの区間だけで、後は全て舗装路のステージであることが大きな特徴である。ラリーは１０月６日午後５時にサンレモをスタートし、第１ステージは７日の午後６時にゴールする。サンレモで丸１日のレストを取ったのち、８日午後７時に６０台で第２ステージを開始。そして９日朝１０時に全ての競技を終了する。

【１９７６年世界ラリー選手権】
１９７６年の選手権は、緒戦のモンテカルロ(１月)からスウェーデン(２月)、ポルトガル(３月)、サファリ(４月)、アクロポリス(５月)、モロッコ(６月)、１０００湖(８月)、サンレモ(１０月)、ツール・ド・コルス(１１月)、ＲＡＣ(１１月)の全１０戦で構成されている。この年はメイクスのみ(ドライバーに選手権が掛かるのは１９７９年から)で争われ、前年同様にランチアがストラトスを駆って圧倒的な強さを見せていた。ゆえに、ひとつのラリーでランチア・チームが上位を独占することが頻発してしまい、チームのエースを勝たせるという｢チームオーダー｣が生まれる素地ともなった。特に１９７６年緒戦のモンテカルロにおけるムナーリの勝利は、ワルデガルドの演出された敗北によるものであったと広く知られている。つまり、ムナーリを勝たせよとの監督命令にワルデガルドがチームのためにとビジネスライクにトップの位置を譲ったのである。

地元のラリーにアリタリア・ストラトスを名乗るワークス・ランチアは、強力な布陣を施いてきた。ここ数年、最高のパフォーマンスを発揮するスーパーカーのストラトスを最も巧みに操るムナーリ、ワルデガルド、ピントのワークスドライバー３名を揃えたのである。

 

 

前年のサンレモで試みた水冷ディスクブレーキが禁止されて特に目新しい変化はなかったが、それでもＶ６エンジン２４バルブのキャブレターチューンで約２７５馬力を発生するマシンは、他のマシンに比べて大きなアドバンテージを保っていた。使用タイヤはむろんピレリだが、舗装路の多いサンレモのコースにあたり新たに開発されたスリックパターンのＰ７も用意され、タイヤ面でも抜かりは無い。

第１ステージにおいて、トラブルで消えて行くフィアット１３１やオペルカデットを尻目にワークス・ストラトスは順調に首位グループを築き上げていた。ＳＳ１から８までをムナーリが取れば、ＳＳ１０から１８までをワルデガルドが取り戻す。両者はその後もお互いに譲らず、激しいトップ争いはＳＳ２６まで続いた。

そして、第１ステージ終了後にワルデガルドは  ｢最初の夜は非常にファンタスティックだった。私がムナーリを数秒リードしたかと思うと、次のＳＳでは彼が私に数秒先行するという、抜きつ抜かれつの自分でも胸のすくような戦いだった。これこそスポーツだと思ったね。」と、チームメイトとの戦いを振り返った。

トップのムナーリ、２１秒差でワルデガルド、３位にヴェリニ(フィアット１３１)、以下ピント、トニーと続く順位で臨んだ第２ステージでも、ストラトス勢の快走は続く。ＳＳ２７から２９までをワルデガルドが最速タイムをマークしてトップに立てば、ＳＳ３０と３１でムナーリが再びトップを奪い返す。

 

 

ワルデガルドはムナーリのタイムの事しか考えなかったし、ムナーリの方でもワルデガルドの事しか眼中になかった。こうして二人の差は常に数秒前後という緊迫した展開へ突入して行く。一方、ピントもヴェリニと３位を激しく争っていたが、こちらの方はヴェリニのコースアウトで決着がついた。

ＳＳ３２はワルデガルド、ＳＳ３３はムナーリと、ドライバーの名誉を賭けたレース並の争いはチーム監督のフィオーリオにとって頭の痛い問題となっていた。｢エースドライバーのムナーリをトップに立たせて収拾を図ったモンテカルロのようにチームオーダーを、またここでも指示しなくてはならないのか．．．。」

悩んだ末にフィオーリオはラリー最後の３ＳＳで競い合うという決定を下したが、これが長すぎるということで最終ＳＳのみで決着させるというものに変更された。つまり、｢最終ＳＳをイコールコンディションでスタートし、ここで速かった者がラリーの勝者になる。それまではお互い９０％の力で走る。」ということで二人の了解を得たのだった。
