デーブ： I have discovered something interesting, Laura. A few things unique to Japanese when they speak English.
最近、ボクは発見したよ。日本人の英会話の特徴。
ポット：いきなり何？ Abruptly, you go. What are they?
デ： First, people here are modest. They say something short and wait for the other party’s response. Americans never ever do that. They talk and talk until a thunder strikes one in the head.
まず、日本人は控えめ。なんか言うと相手の反応を待つ。アメリカ人は喋り続ける。落雷にでも打たれないかぎり。
ポ：なるほどね。 I see.
デ： Another thing is that Japanese have no adjectives in their English. Look at Americans, they are full of them. Mostly, negative and dirty ones, though.
それとニホン英語には形容詞がない。アメリカ人はいっぱい言うよ。良くないのが多いけど。
ポ： Adjectives in the second language are hard to use. One needs a lot of practice and a large vocabulary.
英会話で形容詞を使うのは大変。慣れと語いが要るのよ。
デ： Then, I found three words that never come out in Japanese English, namely mortgage, check and gun. In America, only these three can make up a conversation. I’m repaying my mortgage living paycheck to paycheck. Year, I’m under the gun, too.
ニホン英語に出てこないコトバが３つあるね。モーゲイジ、小切手、銃。アメリカ人なら、この３つで会話が成り立つ。
ポ： We don’t have those here, Dave.
だって、そんなのこの国に無いもん。
デ： First one, you do. It’s a housing loan in Japanese. They should have it printed on the school textbooks.
最初のはあるよ。日本語で「住宅ローン」。これ、学校の英語テキストに載せとけばいい。
ポ： School? What year? 学校って、何年生の？
デ： First grade of junior high. Sooner the better, when it’s about money matters.
