昨日書いた映画City Slickersの中で一度だけ「Deliveranceみたいだ」というセリフが出てくる。
City Slickersについて勉強しようと、いろいろウエブページを読んでいたら、City Slickersで主演したBilly Crystalの発言として
"I wanted to make Deliverance with laughs," says Crystal, who leans in and confidentially whispers, "I haven't told Bruno yet about the 'squeal like a pig' scene. It's going to be a musical number."
というのがあった！
なんとなく繋がるものがあるなあと思っていたのだが、City Slickersの実質的なDirectorでもあったBilly Crystalは映画Deliveranceを意識していたのだった。

Deliveranceは映画の中で、私にとっての最高傑作！なぜ、「私にとっての」と限定を入れているかというと、「万人向けではないよなあ」という自覚があるから。
City Slickersと共に、Deliveranceもぜひ皆さんにも見て欲しいとは思う。City Slickersといいこの映画といい、なんか知らないけど日本ではあまり高い評価がなされていないのが私は不満である。
で、City Slickersを観た翌日、Deliveranceも観た。

舞台は、ダムが建設されて、ダム湖の底に沈むことが決定した山峡の川。そこに、Ed、Bobby、Drew、Lewisの「普通の男友達4人」が変わった“バケーション”を楽しみにカヌーを持ってやってきた。
You wanna talk about the vanishing wilderness?
Why are you so anxious about this?
Because they're building a dam across the Cahulawasse River.
They're gonna flood a whole valley, Bobby. They're drowning the river, man.
Just about the last wild, untamed, unpolluted, unfucked-up river in the South.
There ain't gonna be no more river. Just gonna be a big, dead lake.
こんな、典型的な「都会人」型会話からストーリーは始まる。
Billy Crystalがあげた「the 'squeal like a pig' scene」は、なかなかショッキングなシーンで、ここで描写するのはやめておこう。
その直後に続く会話がこれ。
今、4人の前に死体（男）がひとつある。２人組の悪者のうちの一人。LewisがBow gunで射た。Bobbyは既にその男にrapeされた後で、Edがその次の番、というタイミングで矢は放たれ、撃たれた男は死んだ。
４人は次のように会話する。
Can't we do anything for him?
No. It's a center shot.
I thought they'd surely kill us.
They would have. They would have for sure.
What we gonna do with him?
…そして、さらに４人の会話は続く…
You know what's gonna be here? Right here. A lake.
As far as you can see. Hundreds of feet deep. Hundreds of feet deep.
Did you ever look over a lake... ...and think about somethin' buried underneath it? Buried underneath it!
Man, that's about as buried as you can get!
Well, I am telling you, Lewis, I don't want any part of it.
Well, you are part of it!
It is a matter of the law!
The law? The law? What law? Where's the law, Drew?
自分の命を生きることは難しいし、しばしば残酷だ。他の命に対峙することも難しいし、残酷でもある。
その大変さを、見事に切り出して見せたのがこの映画と思う。
この映画「Deliverance」は私にとっての最高傑作である！
