【新冠】日高管内新冠町の軽種馬牧場「競優（けいゆう）牧場」で２月末、競走馬２頭が射殺された事件で、静内署が１８日、動物愛護法違反（愛護動物の殺傷）などの疑いで、同牧場元経営者の無職榊明彦容疑者（６０）を逮捕し、地元の牧場関係者の間に動揺が広がった。知人らからは「（同容疑者が）牧場の経営難から心理的に追い詰められていたのでは」との声も上がった。

4月に破産手続き開始決定

　同署などによると、榊容疑者は２月２７日夜、同牧場付近で、ライフル銃を使い、牧場で管理していた馬２頭を射殺したとされる。榊容疑者は容疑を認めているという。同牧場は資金繰りの悪化などから、４月に札幌地裁浦河支部から破産手続きの開始決定を受けた。２頭には保険金が掛けられており、同署は保険金目的の可能性もあるとみて動機を調べる。

　同容疑者の逮捕について、地元の牧場関係者からは「飼育していた馬を、なぜ」「苦労して無事にお産をさせ、育てたのに…」と驚きの声が上がった。榊容疑者を知る同管内新ひだか町の６０代の牧場主は「よほど悩んでいたのではないか。経営は自己責任とはいえ、リスクが高い競走馬生産の特殊性が事件という形で表れたのかもしれない」と肩を落とした。

大手グループに太刀打ちできず

　日高管内の生産者でつくる日高軽種馬農協主催の競り市は、昨年の年間売却総額がバブル期の１９９０年に次ぐ８４億円を記録するなど近年活況を呈しているが、関係者は「家族経営の中小牧場にまで恩恵が行き渡っていない」と口をそろえる。

　ある軽種馬牧場の従業員は「中小規模の牧場は、資本力のある大手グループに太刀打ちできず、二極化が進む一方だ」と話す。競優牧場は事件直後は繁殖用の牝馬が１４頭いたが、４月に破産手続きの開始決定を受け、ほとんどの馬が売却されたという。
