前期高齢者のカラオケパーティーの準備中、Elvis Presleyの“Are you lonesome tonight ?”のセリフの発音が難しいので、Elvis本人の歌を聴いてみたのですが、二つの単語が繋がって発声される部分が多く、知っている単語でも認識できないことに気付きました。
例えば、「that the」は「ザッザ」、「playing in」は「プレイン」、「loved you」は「ラブジュー」、「read your」は「リージョァ」、「act two」は「アクトゥー」等です。

外国語の音声をかなり正確に表現できる日本語の凄さを再発見できたのですが、中１で英語を習い始めた頃、カタカナ変換はきつくご法度でした。
この歳になってみると、カタカナ表現は結構スグレモノだと思えます。
はじめは強張ったサウンドでも、繰り返すうちにカドが取れて滑らかな英語になると思います。
あの頃のカタカナ禁止令の真相は何だったのだろうか？
