世界各地で酷い戦争や紛争が続く中、自分のできることは何もないのはつくづく虚しいことである。
ずいぶん昔のことだが、１９６９年、カナダの「オリジナルキャスト」と言うバンドが『One Tin Soldier』という曲を大ヒットさせた。
これは、CCR（クリーデンス・クリアウォーター・リバイバル）の『雨を見たかい？』と同様に、ベトナム戦争時代の反戦歌の一種だと思われるが、アンデルセンの『鉛の兵隊』の話とは無関係である。「錫（すず）」を「鉛（なまり）」と訳したのはなぜだろうか。邦題は『天使の兵隊』であって、販促のためなのか滅茶苦茶である。
今改めてその歌詞を聞いてみると、誠に興味深い。そして胸に刺さる。
以下訳出してみた。
Listen children to a story―子どもたちよ聞け
That was written long ago―それは遠い昔の物語
About a kingdom on a mountain―山の上の王国と
And the valley folk below―その下の谷の住人たち
On the mountain was a treasure―山の上には宝物があった
Buried deep beneath a stone―石の下深くに埋められて

They'd have it for their very own―それを自分たちのものにしようと

So the people of the valley―でもって谷の人々は
Sent a message up the hill―丘の上にメッセージを送る
Asking for the buried treasure―埋められた宝を求めて
Tons of gold for which they'd kill―金の山のためなら殺戮もいとわない
Came an answer from the kingdom―王国からの答えは
"With our brothers we will share―「兄弟たちよ分け合いましょう
All the secrets of our mountain―我らが山に秘密の全てを
All the riches buried there"―そこに隠されたすべての富を」
Now the valley cried with anger―すると、谷間の住人が怒りの声を上げた
"Mount your horses, draw your sword"―「馬に跨がれ、剣を抜け」
And they killed the mountain people―そして、山の人々を殺害した
So they won their just reward―そしてその報酬を手にした
Now they stood beside the treasure―さて、彼らが宝を前に立ち
On the mountain darkend red―日没前の山上で
Turned the stone and looked beneath it―石を引っ剥がしてその下を見ると
"Peace on earth" was all it said―そこには、「地球に平和を」とあった
