とあり、もともとは「火をつけることができる」という意味のラテン語のincendiariusから来ているとのこと。比喩的な意味としては、１７世紀ごとから使われるようになったとのこと。
日本語でもSNSなどで「炎上」と言われたりするように、感情の高まりを炎の燃え上がる様子に例えるのはよくあるメタファー。以前取り上げた「dumpster fire 混乱状態、大惨事」もまた、燃えている状態を混乱状態になぞらえた表現ですね。
