Tora(Tiger)
Associated Shrines
Nikko Toshogu Nikko City in Tochigi Prefecture
Kuramadera Shiwa District in Iwate Prefecture
The tiger is often considered to be a messenger from the gods with an association with `time` such as `the day of tiger`, `the time of tiger`, or `the year of tiger`.
For example, Nikko Toshogu watching tiger is a messenger of the gods because Ieyasu's Zodiac was `Mizunoetora`*(thirty-ninth of the sexagenary cycle), and Bishamonten* (Vaisravana/guardian god of Buddhism) appeared first in Japan where Shigisantyogosonshiji and Kuramadera, and is `helped in the year of tiger by the day of tiger at the time of tiger` so is said to be the messenger of Bishamonten.
