Kaeru (Frog)

Shinagawa Jinja Shinagawa Ward in Tolyo Prefecture
Hiyoshi Jinja Anpachi District in Gifu Prefecture
All over Japan, we can see the stone statues of frogs in many Shinto shrines, but the history of them varies.
Because the sound `kaeru` has the meaning that `everything returns safely` and `everything goes home safely`, it's the frog that is considered to bring good fortune. Inhabiting the ponds of Shinto shrines, they are often thought to be the followers of the Shinto shrine where they reside.
